Default Verizon Family Plan question....

Please Login to Remove!

One of the numbers in the plan is eligible for an upgrade. So, I was going to use that upgrade to get a red 8830 for myself (the prime account holder). I would then move my number over to it, I have done this a few times in the past with no issue.

On line, Verizon is requiring that I sign the number eligible to upgrade up for one of the BB plans in order to purchase the phone.

So, my question is can I simply pick the BIS plan, get the phone and then cancel the BIS plan w/o penalty and/or having to pay more for the BB in the end? The phone is $399 less a $100 rebate with a two year commitment for a net of $299. I can't tell on the terms in the agreement other than I'm of course committing to service for another two years (which is fine).

If someone knows, please let me know.

Thanks!

no, VZW requires your BB have a Blackberry Data Plan.

Right... so I'm moving it over to my number which has a BES plan and I'm gifting my Silver 8830 to someone else.

I'm trying to figure out what happens with the number that ultimately doesn't need a BB plan because their phone (non-BB) in the end isn't changing.

I decided to go ahead and order it and see what happens...

I'll post the results. Seems like others could be in this situation.

I probably would have either waited for the curve to come out on VZW and used the $100 upgrade discount to get that, or wait for a red housing to come out on the accessory market and just swap housings on your current silver 8830. I couldn't stand the silver and bought a full black housing, did the swap, and love it.

Actually I don't want a camera so the Curve is out for me.

I also have a need for several 8830's so I'll buy one less and reuse my silver one for someone else!

I work for Verizon and we do it all the time. You will have to initially activate the 8830 on the line it was ordered for, but it can then be switched to your line. The blackberry data plan can be cancelled without penalty and then moved to your line. The only thing you're looking at is a possible $20 dollar fee to switch your blackberry from one line to the other.

a side note- make sure you activate the blackberry first on the line that you ordered it for (I.E. follow the instructions for activation included with the device), and then switch it over to yours. This is important now because this is how verizon tracks that you renewed your contract. If you don't activate it that way, then your contract won't extend properly and verizon may try to bill you for the full retail price of the handset. Of course, you can get that back, but it's a pain having to call in and explain the situation.

I have done the very same in the past, has been no problem ... I always use my wife and daughters upgrades for my Smart Phones, and pay full retail when their dumb phones are upgraded.

Wirelessly posted (8830: BlackBerry8830/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105)

When I first got my 8830 I just added a second account that to this day isn't used to my family account. Activated the dummy line and then transferred everything over.

Received my Red 8830 today. A bit of a toothpull to ultimately get it to my number but it worked as described by the last couple of posts!

One interesting note - The rebate on line says $100.00, but the form in the box says $100.00 for an 8830 and only $50.00 for a Red 8830. I need to sort that piece out.

I just recieved an email from my Regional Director about this today. There is in fact a $100 rebate, it is a misprint on rebate form.

yes you can transfer and cancel anything you want after initial signing the contract with the original number.

my situation, my girlfriend has totally seperate family plan from mine, she upgraded one of her phones and got the blackberry pearl signing up to data plan and getting all the discounts. after she did that we told the verizon person at the store at the same time, now transfer that phone to me a totally different account, and everything worked flawlessy.
