Last Friday, before heading home for the weekend, I synched my 2-mos old 8900 Curve and was asked if I wanted to upgrade the OS. I clicked Ok and stepped out my office for about 10 min. When I came back, the phone display was off, so I assumed the upgrade was done and unplugged BB from my PC. To my horor, the phone was now completely dead (only red light was flashing). Luckily, our tech told me to plug the damn thing back and finish the upgrade. However, once that was complete, all data were lost. Contacts were restored from Outlook, but a few dozen priceless pics of my 7-year old daughter are gone forever. Since the phone was new I didn't occur to me to make a data backup. Are my pics lost for good?

Do you think developers should provide a bit of warning before commiting datacide?

One thing is for sure: I will never buy another BlackBerry ever again.

Your logic is absurd. You have important data and it didn't occur to you to make a backup of it? Why were you even storing the pictures in device memory and not on an media card?

The upgrade process already backs up your data as part of the process. You want a warning to do a separate backup, just in case the process *might* fail? That's a little much, no?

Got the pics back! Searched C:\ drive for *.ipd and found the Backup. A happy ending afterall! Thanks for your replies, guys.

I've never understood this. Either data is important (regardless of where it is stored) and you back it up or it isn't important.

You were lucky this time. If you really want to be careful then perform a backup before attempting an upgrade. It's no different then it would be with your PC.

I'd even say that backups are more important on mobile devices since they're easily lost/stolen/broken/etc.
