Default 6GB MicroSDHC works on 8800!

Please Login to Remove!

Just got 6GB MicroSDHC from SanDisk this morning. It works in an 8800 running 4.2.1.101. Shows 5.6GB. Will provide screen shot a bit later.

That's great. How did you do it?

I have a Curve 8300 and a 6GB Sandisk card. It also initially shows 5.7GB in the BB, but then insists I format the card. When I do, it comes back with a succesful format, but only a 1.6GB capacity???

Any help would be apreciated

I suspect a 6 GB card will work ok but you will probably only be able to use 2 GB of the space.

You may have purchased a counterfeit card. Where did you get it from? I have heard of the smaller cards being sold as larger ones.

My 6GB card appears to be the genuine article. Also got it from The Carphone Warehouse, one of the UK leading retailers.

Even if I format the card on the PC (where it does show 5.7GB available) and put the folders on the card manually, the BB still asks me to re-format.

Can anyone confirm the correct settings in the (PC based) formatting options? FAT or FAT32, 32KB or 4KB cluster size, etc.

Many thanks,

Quinten

I also have a real 6GB Sandisk and same thing happened! Initially showed 5gb and when I formatted it on 8830, only 1.68gb available. Then tried to format on PC and still only 1.68gb available. This was at suggestion of Sandisk techs. Can't even get the card to format to 6gb on a PC! Have tried XP and Vista. Using FAT (not FAT32). How did you get your card to format on PC back up to full storage volume?

I believe you need to format it using FAT32 to make it work.

If you download a program called SDFormatter (Google it) from the Panasonic web site, it has an option to adjust the size of the SD card while formatting.

This way, through the PC, you can get the full 5.7GB back.

However, I still don't have a solution to use this capacity in the BB.

you Can format your card here and check how much free space you have on your GB media card.

Default 4gb

I have a San Disk 4gb card in my 8830 and after formatting it shows 3.7gb, based on what I am reading will I really only have 2gb of usable space?

For anyone that has the Sandisk 6gb card and can only get 1.68gb available on it after formatting - I've solved the problem.

History:
Put 6gb in my Blackberry 8830, asked to format and then only had 1.68gb on card.
Reformatted in phone - same results.
Took out and formatted on PC using FAT/FAT16 and FAT32 - same results.
Tried on 3 different PCs, XP and Vista - same results.
(make sure reader is SDHC compatible - supplied Sandisk reader is)
Pulled out hair - same results.
Couldn't find a 'free' solution using just Windows tools
Used Acronis Disk Director Suite 10 to increase size of available space on disc using FAT32 (can't recall exact option)
After committing action in Acronis, card now has full capacity!!!
Everything I've read says use FAT/FAT16 - BUT FAT32 worked and also works in the 8830.
Loaded up mp3s, tv epis and movies. Not as fast as my Sandisk Ultra II 2gb card but not bad.
On a different note - if you are trying to find an adapter that will let you use your current headphones with the 8830, I use this one and it works great(not any adapter will work):
Seidioonline.com - Product Search - Criteria: ADA-BB8100M35FST - Headphone Adapter

The program mentioned above sounds as if it will do what you're talking about (adjust size of card). Looks as though it's free too

Default FAT vs FAT32

FAT only supports up to 2GB. So, if you have a hard disk or a microsd card over 2GB, you have to go FAT32.

i have SanDisk 6GB microsdhc card. Had same issues listed above, but successfully formatted it (as FAT32) using SDFormatter and loaded music while attached to computer using SanDisk's USB adapter and Windows Explorer to copy over files (blackberry's Media Manager tool didn't work for me). Put the sd back in the blackberry and it worked!!!

(I listened to music files for a few hours - like an iPod!)....THEN after a reboot of my blackberry i get an error
"A Media Card has been inserted that contains errors. To correct errors please use a disk error-checking utility on a computer.".

Anyone have a workaround for this? I'm on OS v 4.2.2.89 (platform 2.4.0.39) if it is relevant. I could reformat repeatedly (did twice already), but it's not worth it, need a solution that sticks...
