I get lots of unknown/private calls as well (since I have my personal phone forwarded to my work phone) and most of these are telemarketers or IT vendor surveys.
Sometimes I'll be somewhere (a meeting, or in a night class) where I want to take important calls, but I don't want the rest of the noise. I've created two profile exceptions. One exception is for my wife. The other profile exception is for my key work contacts, support personnel, external colleagues, secretaries for important people, or other people in my address book of whom I way be expecting an important call. I assign different ring tones to these two profile exceptions (different ring tones than I use in my main profiles) then I leave the two profile exceptions always enabled. Then when I want the phone to ring less, I change the main profile from Phone Only to Quiet. That way it doesn't ring for calls I'm not expecting (caller ID or not). Then when I want to take more calls, I change the main profile from 'Quiet' back to 'Phone only' or 'Phone only vibrate'. Some people use different ring tones for each different contact. I find three different ringtone groups are sufficient for me. Either it's the wife, it's work, or it's someone else.
That's how I deal with the unknown/private callers or any other calls I'm not expecting to take.
