There was a RIM article on use of the application switcher and memory issues. I thought they'd fixed it in OS 4.3 but maybe not. I rarely use it.

Possibly. Not sure. I quit using application switcher long ago.

Not sure if the folders are helping/hurting memory. It likely has more to do with application switcher.

Messages on BlackBerry smartphone are deleted due to low memory

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Doc ID : KB13814
Last Modified : 2008-03-07
Document Type : Support

Print this page

Environment
BlackBerry® Device Software 4.2.2
SDR131839

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Problem
Email messages, personal identification number (PIN) messages and Short Message Service (SMS) messages are deleted due to low memory on the BlackBerry smartphone.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cause
Summary of Causes
This issue may be caused by the following:

The Application Switcher on the BlackBerry smartphone is setting itself as a system listener and is not being removed.
Switching between two applications on the BlackBerry smartphone using ALT+ESC approximately 25 times will cause a memory leak. From this point on, switching applications on the BlackBerry smartphone will cause an hourglass to appear for an extended period of time, which causes a large decrease in memory on the BlackBerry smartphone.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Resolution
This is a previously reported issue that has been escalated internally to our development team. No resolution time frame is currently available.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Workaround
Perform a hard reset on the BlackBerry smartphone. For instructions, see KB02141.
