Default Educate me! (Sprint Tour for use in Europe - 5 months)

Please Login to Remove!

New guy here. Hello!

I'm studying in the Czech Republic this year and I'm considering picking up a Tour since I'm due for an upgrade (currently using an Instinct). I'll need it for calls (250ish min), texting (unlimited), and data (email, internet, GPS). If anyone could clarify how I can go about this and how much I'll likely be spending I'd really appreciate it.

If it makes a difference I am on a very inexpensive friends and family plan with Sprint.

I have the Everything BlackBerry Plan with 450 minutes, unlimited messaging and unlimited data, internet included. $60/month (I get a small discount).

You would need to add some kind of international (World Wide) data plan to that for your time overseas.

Wirelessly posted (8130)

You will want to add the international unlimited data plan for 69.99 per month. I would suggest using data rather than phone if you can.

There is currently no VoIP application for the BB, if that is what you are referring to using.

Won't I be charged an outrageous amount for using minutes and data overseas?

I was planning on using pre-paid sim cards in Europe to avoid this but I don't know if I'll be able to use data as well?

These are great questions - I have similar ones. I understand that Sprint will unlock the Tour for free with just a phone call, which will allow you to use the prepaid SIMs in Europe (which save tons of money). But no one seems to know whether we can get data plans on those SIMs as well?

I've heard so many conflicting answers. I'm more confused than ever.

"Help me blackberryforums, you're my only hope!"

ps I've contacted RIM, Sprint, Verizon, Vodaphone, and O2. They are absolutely worthless.

Getting the Tour unlocked and using a prepaid SIM card will be the most cost effective solution.

As for data, it depends on the carrier if they provide BB data on their prepaid plans. You would have to check with the carrier you're interested in using while in Europe.

Go to this site International Cell Phones, World Phones, SIM Cards, Satellite Phones
before you go and you can get what you want before you leave...Just pop the sim into the unlocked phone and your good to go. They also have pre-paid data plans.

They are out of stock for the Czech Republic and the prices appear much higher than local Czech providers.

Sadly; no Skype as yet... BUT - if you have a Google Voice ID, their Blackberry app does allow very inexpensive (2-3 cents per minute) from/to many countries.

Thanks for the info. I'm making the purchase this week. Is there anything I need to know about unlocking the phone?

Piece of cake...

After receiving & activating your phone, make sure normal calls, email & data work. Then call Sprint Intl Support @ 888/226-7212 and ask them to activate your SIM for overseas travel coming up "soon". Once that is done, then say "Oh - BTW; I will also need the Tour unlocked to use a local SIM while overseas". They should do that with no questions asked... Good luck!

You can also use the international online chat to get this done.

Currently the only pre-paid service that offers BlackBerry data plans is Orange UK.
