The installation process removes OS5 before loading OS6.

One of the many great things about BlackBerrys. New OS version are not pushed onto your phone like with many other types. And you always have the option to downgrade back to a previous version. Try doing that with an Android device!

Another cool thing about the BB OS is that the firmware and OS are not separate. When I was using an HTC Evo they pushed out an update to the firmware that hosed a lot of features. I (and a ton of other folks) were stuck with it until they pushed out a fix.

And using the OS from whatever carrier releases it is sweet. I don't have to wait for Sprint to release an update if Verizon puts one out first. BlackBerrys are carrier-agnostic that way.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager will only show the OS versions officially released by the carrier to which the device is branded.

If no update is showing, then the device has the latest version released by that carrier.

If you want to update, then you will have to download the OS released by another carrier to your computer, install it on the computer, and then install it to the device.

However, if you are new to BlackBerry devices and updating the OS, then you really should wait and get to know the device and how it works before attempting the update.

Otherwise, go here.
