Do we see a pattern on the countries asking for this?
Catherine, data is not stored on RIM's servers, it just transits through them.
I don't trust any government that demands to snoop on my communication in the name of 'national security'.

That's what I'm thinking, too. I'm sure they have ways to track email, RIM or no RIM, as well as text messages, thru the local carriers and ISPs and such.
But since BBM is PIN to PIN, it's totally in RIM's playground. Going to be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Snooping is only the half of it, I believe.
I think the other half is controlling the information being received by the population.
As I say, I don't think BIS or BES per se is the worry for them, it's the fact that BBM has caught fire with young people, and they are able to receive information from sources outside of the control of the regime, and very easily, very efficiently, pass that information on to others.

Reading the latest news on the issue with Saudi Arabia, you'd think this was The Issue, and The Solution is to put servers in the country. And now the regulators are happy. At any rate, it's clear RIM has done what Saudi Arabia wanted.
Could that be what German government officials are worried about? The confidentiality of the communications with interests inside Saudi Arabia via blackberry now? And not just Saudi Arabia, but the other countries to follow.
It gets curiousor and curiousor.
