If you are living in Oslo, Hamburg, Chicago, Brooklyn, London Area, or Hong Kong you can use the free beta version of TopoExplorer for BlackBerry.

It seems to be a very early beta version which actually just plots your GPS location onto a map. The maps that are delivered for free with the beta version are topographic maps. Some of them are even older Russian (must be secret soviet government stuff) ones. The following maps (with their scales) are included:

• Oslo Region (1:200.000 Map)
• Hamburg Region (1:500.000 Map)
• Chicago (1:24.000)
• Brooklyn (1:24.000)
• London Area (1:500.000)
• Hong Kong (1:200.000)

So this application just makes sense for people living at those areas - at least at the moment. It is said that the final version will support

• 1:24.000 Maps for the whole US
• 1:50.000 - 1:1000.000 Maps for the whole World

I have tested the application on a camping trip to some outskirt areas and it worked fine. Though it is a beta version I did not find any bug. Well, some more features would be nice but it is still a beta version

I like the approach. Mostly I don't have cell phone reception respectively no internet connection to download maps to my mobile phone. So I need maps on my phone and this in a quite detailed way. GPS reception and resolution is quite well like on most BlackBerry GPS apps. It is still missing features but I hope the app will be pimped a bit in the next version

This sounds like something I would use while hiking, so downloading the maps onto a card beforehand is not an issue. Hikers who don't prepare don't last long! I hope TopoExplorer gets going soon.

right, you have to have the maps already stored on your card. if not, you won't see anything ... ;)
