Does BES need the Java SDK loaded into the system? I know it needs the clientware java loaded in, but what about the SDK?

Only needs the runtime.

It does not and I would reccomend that you not install it on your server as it is quite the resource hog. You may want to find a robust machine to install the SDK on and do your development there.
