Default How to xfer phone stuff to new device

Please Login to Remove!

I've not run across this information in the faq's so I hope it's not stupid of me to ask here.

I'm going to probably upgrade my pearl 8100 (att) to an 8310 ( att ) tomorrow, and in preparation am trying to find out what the best way is to get all my stuff to the new phone.

I assume there is a way in the desktop mgr that will transfer all the contacts, calendar, phone logs, memos etc... not sure what that would be.

Also, I have:
beyond411
Sudoku
Mini Opera
Tellme
Yahoo Go
Voice Record ( VR+ ) -- probably not needed on the new device
Jive Talk ( still unregistered )
ColorBall
BrainUp

Do each of these need to be repurchased , or do I need to reinstall from the original install files and search to find the license keys and reinstall them ?
Do they even work from the pearl to the curve ?

Any advice on general best practice to change bb devices would be a great help. Not sure how much I can count on the store people to help.

Thank you,
Floyd

Use the switch device wizard in desktop manager

Check and see what version DM you have the latest (well most stable) is desktop manager 4.2 sp 2 if you don't have download it will make process very easy

you can use the Switch Device Wizard if you are moving to the 8310. If you get the 8320 or 8820, don't use it, it will screw your WiFi setup.

Email your developers on the other apps, they may need to supply you with a new key.I don't see but one or two other commercial apps on your list.

Thanks. I guess I should have checked that first.
I had heard not to use that if you have wifi on the destination phone, because it would screw up your wifi settings, because the pearl doesn't have wifi, and those settings would be moved to the new device. Wasn't sure if that same logic would apply to the gps on the curve.
Anway, I have version 4.2.2.14 ( the latest from ATT website )

It was discovered when everyone was moving to the 8320 recently, it actually messes with the H@H settings for TMo WiFi... which would not affect you anyway on AT&T, but I stated that since others do read these posts.

Whatever you do, do a complete backup of the old BB before anything.

Also, you can do this, if you want. Slightly tedious, but if you are tech-inclined, not big deal.

We do have on our list to write a good and complete "I'm changing BBs, what do I do" type of FAQ... need the time to do it.

Thanks again J.
Let me ask you about that procedure to make sure I understand it.
If I understand what it's doing correctly, what I would do is:
1) First, for safety, to a complete backup of my current device.
2) Follow that procedure to get the backup of the third party apps
3) Move that pin folder somewhere
4)Then do the switch device wizard to copy all my organizer data etc.. from the old phone to the new phone.
5) When that's all done, click on the alx file in the pin folder that was created in step 2 and 3.
6) Then run the apploader to reinstall all those apps.

Does that sound about right ?

Thanks.!!!
