Default New Bold owner with OS question

Please Login to Remove!

I'm an old time BlackBerry user, and I picked up a Bold yesterday to try out to possibly replace my 8800.

So far so good after configuring font size, changing devices on my e-mail account, and a bunch of other things.

This Bold has AT&T's 4.6.0.167 OS. What would be the advantages of going to 4.6.0.124? I used to keep the 8800 current on releases, but wasn't always certain I really gained anything until the 4.5 was released.

I poked around here and did some searching, but I still don't know if the OS upgrade has distinct advantages.

Comments would be welcomed.

Actually .124 is a downgrade from what you have. The latest official release can be found here:

I transposed. It should read .214

Is there much to be gained by going with a newer OS release?

Usually it corrects issues like memory leaks, battery drainage, etc.. I like to stay current with all of the bug fixes.

My personal opinion (and I have been flamed for it before) is as long as what you have works and there are no problems there is no real reason to update to a minor upgrade. No need risking something going wrong and turning your device into a brick.

I am still running 4.2 on my 8800! It works for me the way I want it and see no real need to upgrade.

I agree with Dubdub. I stick with what works. I have used all of the "leaked" OS builds and I continue to go back to 4.6.0.210. It has been the best for me.

I agree. Find one that works. For me .167 was having problems with maintaining a 3g signal. I am running .216 with no problems, better 3g, slightly improved battery, and seems snappier. One downfall (for some) Windows Live Search does not work.

Wirelessly posted (8300)

It depends. Different versions have better things(more/better memory management, battery life) some suffer from quarks.

.216 gps is having issues
.210 issues with media player and corded head phones w/the vol resetting. Sometimes the wifi doesn't work or is low.

I use .190 (used corded headphones. .190 has a thumbnail issue for images on device memory but it has far better acquisition of gps(75%) improvement at least over the .167 the wifi is a tad slower synching to rims compared to .167 but I find it also detects 3G faster coming out of a dead zone and in my iffy reception home, I get 3G more consistently then .167 but it does have an annoying memory leak...I usually battery pull 2-4 times per day but I only have 21 megs free on boot(power user I guess)

The issues with gps are preventing me from upgrading as is the media bug but once they get visual voice mail working I'm going!!

Do some research you can always go back though

I decided to try .216, and had no problem installing it. I did not see the post just before this one re: GPS issues until just now, so I'll see what happens in the morning when I test GPS and Telenav out on my drive to work, and no, I don't need Telenav to find my office.

Thanks for everyone's input.

The GPS and Telenav seemed fine on .216 this AM. What problems have people been experiencing?

Google maps is not getting a lock on GPS on .216 for me. It only gives me an estimated radius. Is this pretty much the way it's going to be?

mine takes a while to a GPS on google maps, but it does eventually home in. works better near a window (if in doors)

AmAze also gave me a connection error as well. .216 has been great so far, but without GPS, there's no way I can stay on it. I'm holding off on reactivating my BES until I can find a solid build, so it needs to be found soon, lol.

I pulled the battery and re-started Google maps, it seems to work well now, however AmaZe is still non-functional. Oh well, google maps is good enough for me, I have a GPS in my car.
