Default SMS vs. IM???

Please Login to Remove!

ok I have searched but can not get a clear cut answer - does anyone else use AT&T Wireless on thier BB? I have the data only plan (no voice) and want to be able to send text messages to my sales reps on thier cell phones. When I try to send a SMS message they never go through - it says failure due to packet error. I called AT&T and of course no one really seems to understand the BB and I was told that I probably have to have a voice plan of some sort and then I will be charged for text messages that I send.

To me if you have an unlimited data plan you should be able to send text messages some how at no charge. I am confused on the differences of text messaging and SMS messaging if there is even any difference?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I just want to message my reps and there has to be a simple way to do this.

Thanks

to my knowledge, SMS and text messages are the same thing. this also requires a non-data network on some phones, however i know with the 7100t model, you have the option to send SMS over GPRS (data network).

That's right... SMS are GSM messages (though they'll send on GPRS). They're a part of the voice plan. Have you tried PIN-PIN messages?

A workaround if you have a server available would be to setup a WAP site that sends SMS messages to different carriers from their built in "Send a text message" scripts.

If you have a BES/MDS, you can send instant messages through GPRS data rather than SMS. So that it's part of unlimited data.

There's lots of Blackberry compatible instant messengers now...

WebMessenger, IM+, BlackChat, VeriChat ...

The option to send sms over gprs is on more than just the 7100t, it simply doesn't work unless a particular carrier supports sending them that way.
