There are times during the day when in the office at work that I desire to not have my work email also stacking up in my blackberry. What is the best method/setting I can change to stop unneeded duplicate emails from coming to the blackberry.

If you are BIS, there is not a good solution. You can go to your phone Options > Advanced > Network > Data Services = OFF. That will keep mail and other data from coming to your phoine, including IMs or internet browsing.
After you turn the Data Services back = ON, all the mail you have missed will likely just come flowing back.

If you are on BES and have desktop manager installed you can choose to "disable email redirection while handheld is connected" in device manager under email settings in version 4.2 or redirector settings in 4.1 or lower

In both these solution it still postpones the inevitable (unneeded email will still stack up on the phone, albeit later). Is there also any way to from period to period prevent emails from coming or is the only way to drive this would be from the outlook side by physically moving the emails out of the main folder while data is set off so that when data is turned back on they "no longer exist" to be moved?

Well, you still have not answered the basic question we are both guessing at... at you BIS or BES?

If you are on BES, the problem is easily solved by deleting or marking read.

Otherwise, no way.

On BIS, the only way around this is actually delete your BIS account at your carrier website, and setup again later. This is a fairly common question here on the Forum, I am surprised you couldn't find the answer in a search.

The best solution is this... delete those emails en masse at the end of the day...
highlight the first message, hold down the shift button and scroll to select all those to delete.
OR scroll to the top date of your message folder, click to menu to MARK ALL PRIOR OPEN, or DELETE ALL PRIOR.

If you turn of your ability to receive e-mail as mentioned above you can then delete those e-mails from Yahoo or Gmail or whoever-on the website. Outlook would have already pop'd them and they would be on your pc. When your bb communication gets turned back on there will be no e-mails to grab as they are deleted. BIS 2.3 makes this possible.

I think that will work but I am just thniking it thru. Give it a shot.

It is still not perfect as you need to have your Data connection turned off and may want to go on the net but you just do not want those e-mails.

The new BIS 2.3 syncs Outlook webmail deletions, so it should solve your problem. It does take a while though (1+ hour for me).

If you had the Blackberry mail forwarder software installed on the PC, set it to "disable mail forwarding while cradled". That way when your BB is plugged into the PC you won't get any email on the phone. And no it doesn't send you those emails again when you uncradle the phone, they're simply not forwarded.

John--The OP never say he had yahoo or gmail... Many Outlook setups are there to leave messages on server so the BB will pick it up. So the OP will need to reset his "leave Messages on server" to OFF and change that each day if he runs out to lunch or down the street for the end of the day he leaves his Outlook running and forgets to change that setting, he won't get his emails. There are various workarounds to the issue, but none of them are ideal.

Ameagle, the OP is not Outlook Webmail. So that doesn't solve the OP issue.
