Ok so now I took the "proxy" out of the initialization string and put it back under the TCP setting. It also worked that way. Great. Do you think I get a higher rate if I change the max speed in network connections? Go to the General tab > Configure for your Cingular DUN and change it there. It told me I connected at 921600 instead of 115200. Now did I really get a faster connection?

This is a general complaint that we have with Cingular. There have been a number of occaisions where devices that have worked and were properly provisioned for months, if not years, suddenly don't work due to changes to a given line of service (e.g. a device that had international roaming and was used multiple times internationally suddenly doesn't have it anymore, etc.). This never happens with our T-Mobile devices.

What color is the bottom of your Sim card? Is it a 3g Card?

John, just a quick note. In your original post the string that you put had spaces in it:
+cgdcont=1, "IP", "proxy"
When I removed the spaces, this corrected my probs.

So technically it should be
Correct?
If this does not work, I'm going to the Cingular store today and going to switch back to the "non 3g" sim card.

Sim Card Color
Blue on top. To hard to get out to look at bottom. I have had it a number of years so I don't think its a 3G card. Also I did put in the username/password.

That is what I understand - any Orange customers get it to work.
I will be posting my tips shortly. Want to add that if I can.

I too get no Standard Modem when I have 4.1 installed. I installed 4.0 and it did put a standard modem in there but I was unable to query it. When I installed 4.1 over the top it removed the standard modem from the device manager.
Any ideas?

Why is it that some reps can find it and some can't?

Do a complete uninstall first
Then reinstall 4.1 from scratch.

Not sure honestly, I'm going to go back to the store today and switch back to the old sim card and see if that does anything for me.

Be careful with WAP. I am battling with Cingular now, and to the best of what I can figure, WAP used by 3rd party apps or when setting the TCP to wap.cingular (ie. using BB as a modem) will incur usage charges. There are plans available, but nobody at Cingular seems to be able to explain the costs and how it works. Anyone else had success getting it explained?
From what I can tell, you need a seperate WAP plan set up to use the "Internet Browser". The BB plan only gives you the blackberry.net APN (which can't be used for BB as a modem or 3rd party apps) and the "Cingular Browser." Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
Again, I could be very wrong. Maybe the wap.cingular APN is included in the BB Unlimited plan. Who knows? Customer service and BB support sure don't!
By the way, when I signed up at the Cingular store, they set me up with a WAP pay-per-use plan (but did not tell me this), but told me my BB unlimited gives me ALL DATA USAGE FREE. So much for the truth... I guess it is not thier fault - the store employee training seems to be very bad.
Data is data. WTF can't they just do what they say and provide all services on an unlimited basis? When is unlimited limited? With Cingular.

It just gets worse. They took the WAP.cingular off of my account. Now I call back and they tell me that they can't put it back on! They even went so far as to get a RIM rep on conference call to explain that Cingular does not offer a public WAP service. I am furious. I just want my old 7280 back on my old AT&T plan. Of course, I can't do this now.
It's time for a change. Cingular has lost my business.

So is Wap.Cingular a feature?
As far as my features i have
WIX
PDA BLACKBERRY UNL 44$
I keep still getting error 736 whenever I connect, I switched to the old sim card, rechecked my settings 6 million times, deleted rreadded the blackberry plan and wix, Resent serv books, reg now, And on and on and on, Keep getting Error 736, the whole time. Also TCP settings
And on my 3rd party apps like Web messanger I get the Tunnel not found Error and also verichat does the same thing.
I don't know why it just seems like something is defective on my account, or am I just not having the right features?

Well, the agent definitely did not know what she was talking about. It just started working again after about 1 hours after getting off the phone with Cingular. Amazing, since I was assured and reassured that wap.cingular does not exist for Cingular BB users and it is not technically feasible except for Cingular Blue/ ATT customers. I am now getting full modem and 3rd party wap support. Now whatever I get billed will be the Easter egg at the end of this hunt for the truth.
I do not know if it is a "feature" or not, but it is automatically set up with BB UNL if the provision the account in a certain way. I was told I do not have WIX. I think you get wap.cingular if you have any MEDIA NET plan. It looks like there is still a low included data usage with pay-per-usage charges after that (again, I was lied to - they said Media Net Works was unlimited, but it appears it is really 5MB + $0.01 per KB thereafter).

I did a fresh install of 41 desktop software (deleted dirs of old one as well as registry keys) and still| no standard modem shows up? Thinking the 41 I have was changed in any way (used cd that came with 8700c) I used a previous 41 cd and still no dice. I even tried with 40 executable and 41 upgrade from files we downloaded. Same thing. How do I get standard modem to show? Win xp pro on a dell d600 if it matters
