Hello, I am a GM for a Wireless Dealer. I am working through a pretty big BB deal that I had to pull RIM in on. I spoke to my contact about a new iDEN device. He tells me RIM is not looking to launch a new iDEN device however there are alot of talks of a Hybrid device. He did not have any specifics on launch dates just that there are talks. I wanted to make sure if I sell this customer a bunch of the 7100i's they would not launch a new device in 3 months. He confirmed this.
So take it for whats its worth, This is coming from upper management @ RIM.

a new nextel blackberry(hybrid or otherwise) is a nice thought, but i've heard 'speculation' from other alleged people who spoke with upper management, or got a tip from a rim employee, or whatever else, its all just hearsay at this point. I've already switched to cingular. Nextel is a lost cause, and even if a new phone comes out, i dont trust sprint at all. The screwed over every nextel customer for the past 2-3 years or however long its been since the buy out. Not ONE good thing has come from sprint buying nextel.

I thought I heard that the 8800 on Cingular has Cingular's PTT. It may have been the 8100, not sure. But if that is the case, wouldn't it just be a software issue to bring that device over to Sprint/Nextel as the hybrid? I also read in the other thread that the Moto Q may be the next to receive Hybrid with PTT. I've taken the luxury of naming it the 'Hy Q'. Poetic huh.

i really would love to see a nextel smartphone other then the BB 7100. I was told by a friend that there is one coming. He stated a WM phone on nextel iden only is coming he was told from his nextel rep. He works for a larger company and has a rep come to him for phone service.

A WM phone on iden would be great. The Motorola Q would make this man happy. I read some where on the the motorla q fan site that an iden model could be in the works who knows. Then a Blackberry would be even better it's the waiting game

I am really interested to see what comes about. I have have the 7520 and the 7100i....I went back to the 7520, I like the fully thumb board. I know that 7100i had many improved features but I am back to the 7520, just a waste of money for me on the 7100i. I can't wait to see what comes from RIM, I would really like to see some new BBs with full thumb board, just as long as I can PTT.

Cool rumor of the new bb for nextel

Blackberry 8700 PDA is not a huge step forward in terms of design (the EV-DO’s the big deal here), but it’s definitely a smidge less clunky than your typical BlackBerry. The device, however, will not be Wi-Fi or VoIP compatible - and no camera either.
Here are some Blackberry 8700 Cell Phone features:
EVDO +BB and EDGE + BB deviceGPS and IM built-inFast processor + 64MB RAMMore native and attachment viewingClassic form factor + sleeker design, speakerphon

It's my understanding that Sprint sold the entire Nextel network (not just the freqs) to the Feds for use by Public Safety. Nextels bled into the PS 800mHz bands. As per the agreement, Nextel has to be completely shut down in 2010 although my facts might not be 100% accurate. I would be very surprised if anything new in regards to a BB comes out for Nextel, although I can't imagine it would be that hard for RIM to release a Nextel 8700i. After all, the 8700i is just the full keyboard cousin of the 7100i.

I've heard that recently Sprint/Nextel is rethinking the shutdown agreement with the government because of the success of their Boost phones, but I doubt they can get out of it as they've already received some compensation.

Nope, not me. I dropped Nextel 7520 for the 8700e from Sprint. The service is better than I expected, GPS is more accurate, telephone calls are much clearer, telephone is lighter, and graphics are better.

It's funny how you hear things that are similar. yet different. Sprint did not 'sell' the frequencies to the Government, the frequencies were taken by the FCC. Nextel IDEN will be around until 2012, when the frequencies are no longer acessible to them.
At this point, Nextel is working on a new technology they are calling Q Chat. It is probably VOIP, but it is in its infancy and will develop as it grows. I hope they come up with something as quick and simple as direct connect. If Q Chat is that good then Sprint will take the lead. I wouldn't be surprised to find that Q Chat is a video cell phone....the Jetson's are coming...

I just hope RIM do not take design ques from Motorola because the powersource hybrid phones are ugly as hell sorry. They take nextel backwards instead of forward interms of design. I hope RIM make a device like the daytona only hybrid and please do not add a stick for an antena for rececption on top

the antenna is required by the fcc because of the frequency range of nextels. as long as the iden system existings, nextel phones will have antennas

The antenna has nothing to do with the FCC. Both Sprint CDMA and VZ utilize 850 MHz as well and don't have antennas. The antenna is a requirement of the iDEN network and recepetion of the devices.

I am not sure about that, everything i have heard and read says that they antenna has nothing to do with reception. it is purely to direct frequency waves away from your head.

Go into the trace mode of an iden handset and note the signal strength with the antenna up versus down - you will notice a difference.
