Exclamation "public" account sends delivery receipts revealing my "private" address

Please Login to Remove!

I created two totally separate Gmail accounts -- one for "private"
correspondence and the other for "public." Both are integrated with BIS.

I've been exchanging mail with someone using my "public" address, but they received delivery receipts from both addresses... thus revealing my "private" address! The delivery notices are being generated by BIS even though I'm not using my BlackBerry to write mail (only get notifications and read).

I don't want my real name revealed for privacy reasons! How can I prevent this from happening?

Additional Info:
- In my BlackBerry I have "Confirm Delivery" and "Confirm Read"
disabled.
- Gmail doesn't offer any receipt feature.
- From my home PC, I log in to each Gmail account separately via web browser when I send/receive mail from them (not using a client app).
- The Gmail accounts are not linked or forwarded to each other in any way.
- I often Bcc: my "private" account when sending from my "public" account.

In case you aren't following, here's an example:

1. I logged in to "public@gmail.com" and received mail from someone.

2. The recipient received a delivery receipt from
"private@gmail.com". Here's the delivery receipt he received:

Return-Path: <private@gmail.com>

It has nothing to do with you. The person you are corresponding with is senting you email from his BB and he has the "Confirm Delivery" setting enabled.

He doesn't have a BlackBerry. And even if he did, how does that make any difference?

My real issue is that he's also receiving a delivery receipt from my "private" account which I'm not even using to correspond with him! It seems like BIS just sends out a delivery receipt for both integrated e-mail accounts every time it gets a request from either one of them.

I don't mind if he requests a delivery receipt, but BIS should only send one for the account he's sending the request to.

See my original post -- I've checked/double-checked/triple-checked that I have all receipt settings checked to "No" for all integrated e-mail accounts.

Please note that I'm not the one requesting a receipt.

That's the only deciding factor of receipts though. Id suggest contacting RIM to see if this is a gmail issue.

I understand. But the person is requesting a delivery confirmation from my "public" e-mail address , and my BB is sending back 2 receipts -- one from my "public" address, and another from my "private" address. This person didn't even know about my "private" address and has never sent mail to it.

Why is BIS automatically replying with delivery receipts from both of my integrated e-mail accounts, even though the person I'm corresponding with is only using one of them???

To my knowledge, I can't control this BIS functionality from my BB.

Nope! But I am in the habit of manually adding my "private" address to the BCC line when I send mail from my "public" address. I've tested a number of times making sure there was nothing in BCC or CC, but the problem persists.

does the other person receive read receipts when you do not BCC your private address? And just a shot in the dark, do you get a copy of all sent items in Gmail?

Thanks. But are these settings even the real issue here? I think the real issue is that receipts are coming from both accounts, even though I'm only corresponding via one of them.

Anyway, here are my settings:
Message Services: [email address]
Confirm Delivery: No
Confirm Read: No
Send Read Receipts: No

Message Services: [email address]
Confirm Delivery: No
Confirm Read: No
Send Read Receipts: No
1. I'm assuming "Confirm Delivery" determines whether or not I want to confirm that my message has been delivered to another party.
2. I'm assuming "Confirm Read" determines whether or not I want to confirm that my message has been delivered to another party.
3. I'm assuming "Send Read Receipts" determines whether or not I want to allow my BB to send confirmation to another party that I've read a message.

I don't see any option allowing me to determine whether or not I want to allow my BB to send confirmation to another party that their message has been delivered to it (not necessarily read).

This is sounding like a BIS issue -- not a setting on my BB.

I tried that test; he still gets delivery receipts from my "private" address even when I don't include it in the BCC line. :-/ He's using Outlook and under Tools, Preferences, E-Mail Options, Tracking Options -- has read receipt turned OFF, while delivery receipt turned ON.

Yep, I do get a copy of all sent items in Gmail. I filter them out at BIS so they don't get forwarded to my handheld and clutter my Messages Inbox.

Neither. I'm also using BES (through my company) so it's set to "Desktop". I've integrated these additional 2 Gmail accounts via Personal Email Set Up.

You already know this, but just for everyone else's benefit... I'm not using my BB to write e-mail from these Gmail accounts -- only to receive/read e-mail. Apparently these receipts are being generated by my BB when I receive e-mail on these accounts.

Is this the thread you are thinking of?

http://www.blackberryforums.com/rant...sses-more.html

It's in Rants and Raves now althought it didn't start out there.

OMG, I have a headache now after reading that thread. I am seeing the same symptoms. I coudn't figure out if that person's configuration matches mine, though.

This thread also describes the issue I'm seeing:

http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...ts-8300-a.html

And there are similar threads on AT&T's forums that don't seem to have a resolution, either.

Delivery Notification for Blackberry Curve
Delivery Notification for Blackberry Curve - RIM BlackBerry - Wireless Forums from AT&T

Delivery Confirmation Messages - Unwanted
Delivery Confirmation Messages - Unwanted - RIM BlackBerry - Wireless Forums from AT&T

One of them suggests a master reset. :-O Would that make any sense? I'm loathe to try it unless there's a possibility it might actually help something.

I remembered seeing an article concerning this problem with standard internet email service. In some servers the simple act of seeing a delivery receipt request flag in the email header will cause the server to respond to a request. This also can cause the linked accounts to send a response.
Example:
Sender A requests a read receipt

Receiver B who has two accounts on the same server AND the system sees as a single account owner can send two receipts to the sender A.

It was stated as a bug in some software implementations that was caused by an unknown combination of links to other applications on the server. The primary thought was to the database of users.

This may not help but it is something that apparently is common enough. Possibly you could drop one of the public accounts and get a new one on a different service such as HotMail to see if it is something that the BES or RIM is causing.

Just some thoughts.
