Hello, I'm Italian, I have bought an unlocked Blackberry 6710.
I have put my Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) Sim-Card and it works good with phone calls and sms service.
Because I would use my Blackberry with email client and msn-chat without use blackberry network, how can I enable the TCI/IP stack to connect directly to TIM Gprs network (APN: IBOX.TIM.IT)
My Blackberry version is 3.6.0.73
I have read that I must upgrade the system to ver. 4.0, but I'm afraid that cause network lock.

Any ideas?

To enable TCP/IP on your old 6710.

1. You must get BES/MDS hosting at $10-25 per month
(But you must already have a BlackBerry plan for this)

2. Or you must upgrade to BlackBerryOS 4 and use the APN for your carrier in Options->TCP->APN.
(No guarantees that this will work.)

Please make sure you are using a 16MB 6710, not an 8MB 6710, though! BlackBerryOS 3.6 is very old, and may not even work with MDS.

I have never heard of anybody getting a network lock due to a BlackBerryOS upgrade, regardless of whether you have a BlackBerry plan or not.

You should be noted that even configuring the APN may not cause Internet software to work. (Even though the APN bypasses the BlackBerry network). You will likely still be charged for data usage even for non-BlackBerry data.

My Blackberry is 16MB model.
I have upgraded it to Sw Ver.4.0 and I have configured the rigth APN in the TCP/IP menu.
I have istalled Verichat, Emailviewer Corporate ed. and Webviewer Corporate ed. and they works very fine on a GPRS network without BES/MDS.
After the upgrade the BB doesn't lock to specific network, and I can use it with Vodafone, Wind or Tim carrier.

What can prevent Internet from working after setting APN in OS 4.0 ?
Assuming you are able to use Internet on ordinary GPRS phone.
What is the difirrence between phones and BB in using Internet via GPRS?

Is it the case with using TCP/IP stack only and no WAP 1.1 stack?

You need to find out the correct APN for your mobile phone carrier, and then configure your BlackBerry with it. If it still does not work, you must configure your carrier data plan/bill by calling your mobile phone carrier and making sure that the proper APN (Access Point Name) is added to your account. Sometimes this requires the purchase of an additional data plan. (for non-BlackBerry data, because Verichat uses non-BlackBerry data, for example)

However, I am aware of what you have mentioned.
As I said in my previous post - I am able tu use the APN and browse Internet using ordinary GPRS phone.
I assume that after placing my SIM in BB and setting the APN I will be able to surf the www as well, right?

I do have data plan for GPRS.
My operator do not support BB data plans.

Give it a try.... It may or may not work.
(Make sure you have BlackBerryOS 4) ...

You will need to use a third party web browser such as Reqwireless from www.reqwireless.com .... And it's possible software such as www.verichat.com would work too (try the "non-BES" version)
