Default Setting Music file as ringtone - Newbie

Please Login to Remove!

I am trying to set a music file as my ringtone, it appears in the profile as the active ringtone but when I recieve a call it's silent - Is there a limit to the size of file or file type? (For info I'm using an .mp3)

Thanks,
Barry

If you don't have a microsd card, your file size will be limited to 2.8mb. Make sure your profile is set to phone only and see if that helps. Also, if you need to shrink your mp3 and still have the quality, try dietmp3.

I used the dietmp3 to shrink my song but I am still not able to use it as a ringtone. I get an error that says the file is not compatible (or something similar).

Just as general rule: if you don't use a microSC card you will have a hard time using your own mp3s as ringtones, either because of the filesize or format or maybe bitrate. If you really want that feature consider a small card (256-512).

Don't use a full song as a ringtone. First of all, the phone is only ringing for what, 20-23 seconds, so you're wasting a lot of valuable space by having the full song loaded.

Download a program called Audacity - freely available for Windows and other platforms.

Once downloaded, trim your mp3 down to 25-30 seconds. You should be left with a file that's only about 300k, at the most when using high sample rates, much less at lower sample rates.

Load that file to your phone and use that as your ringtone.

HTH.

Audacity is what I use for this. You need to dl/install/unzip a LAME encoder to use it if you don't have one already. It's not the most intuitive program for trimming songs, but it works and it's free.

I use wavepad to cut parts out to use as a ringtone. You can get it at download.com. Works like a charm.

I'd use that. Audacity is really for more extensive editing of mp3's, for simple cutting wavepad may be easier.
