Entourage garbles messages sent from BB
Please Login to Remove!
Hi All,
I have recently switched to Mac/Entourage from PC/Outlook. I have a problem with reading messages in my "Sent Items" folder that I have sent from my BB handheld.
These come out as garbled. Looking at the headers, this is possible because of the encoding that BB sends the messages at; so, for example:
Code:
X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft Exchange V6.5
Received: from IP ([IP]) by exchange-server.uk ([IP]) with Microsoft Exchange Server HTTP-DAV ; Fri, 21 Sep 2007 12:51:09 +0000
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/html;
charset="utf-8"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64

Content-class: urn:content-classes:message

Of particular relevance seems to be: Content-Type: text/html;
charset="utf-8"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 Perhaps Entourage can't deal with this properly.
Searching the forums reveals that others have had a problem with this in that some recipients cannot receive e-mails. However, I can't see a solution, and nobody seems to have posted about this issue in respect to "Sent Items" in Entourage.
Can anyone confirm if they also have this issue? Even better, any ideas on a solution?
Many thanks!

I am assuming that you are not on a BES, please correct me if I am wrong. I have not found a fix for the OWA setup through the BIS. If you switch the account to IMAP in the BIS everything should work as desired.

Thanks for this - interesting that this may be a solution. I will have to give it a try as I don't think BIS/IMAP loses me any functionality over BIS/OWA. Again, thanks for posting, and pleased I'm not the only one who has noticed this. On, and BTW I'm not on BES as you correctly identify.

BB, OWA, Entourage and IMAP
Hi,
I have the same problem with seeing SENT ITEMS on my Entourage when I send them from my BB when it is configured as OWA.
The problem with switching to an IMAP configuration on the BB is that it causes BB INBOX duplicate messages. When they are received on the BB and then "touched" in any way in Outlook or Entourage they reappear on the BB as a new email. Very frustrating and difficult to reconcile.
Any ideas on how to get a BB to work well over BIS when the email account is hosted on Exchange?
Thank you!

This is a known issue with Entourage I believe. Entourage does not properly decode the messages that are sent via your BB (or iPhone!). However, messages sent from a WinMo handset and sync'd via MS ActiveSync are decoded correctly. I believe if you have a OWA account for your email, you can see the messages properly displayed.
I was trying to find the KB article on the MS site but was unsuccessful.

Good day folks. Was anyone able to find the kb article? I'm experiencing the same thing, with both Blackberry and iPhone. When I look in the Sent folder, it's garbled. However, when I look at the same email in Outlook, the text is just fine.
Thanks!
**Update: Found this link for a temporary workaround: Use AppleScript to read ActiveSync Sent Items in Entourage (The Entourage Help Blog)

HUGE Thanks for tracking this down. I did some more reading on that thread and the users say that the root cause is Exchange 2003 w/WebDAV and that MS Outlook/OWA has a "fix" already built into handle the issue while Entourage does not.
I can confirm that I see the issue with Exchange 2003. Hopefully later this year when our Org upgrades to 2007 this will go away.
Again -- nice find!

Fix for garbled sent items in Entourage
Hello -
I too have come across the problem described by others. It bugged me no end today, so I took the time to write an AppleScript for Entourage that fixes the problem.
The script and installation instructions are attached below. Here is what the script does:
- Opens a new message in the Sent Items folder.
- Edits this message to remove erroneous headers.
- Writes the new message to the Sent Items folder, and marks it as read.
- Deletes the original message in the Sent Items folder.
To install:
Open Script Editor, and copy and paste the AppleScript below (everything between the lines that say ---- cut here ---- ) into a new file.
Save that file as FixActiveSyncSentItems in ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Entourage Script Menu Items
Create a rule in Entourage with the following criteriaFolder is "Sent Items" Message body contains "X-rim-org-msg-ref-id:" then
Run AppleScript "FixActiveSyncSentItems"
HTML Code:
---- cut here ----
tell application "Microsoft Entourage"
set myExchangeAccount to item 1 of every Exchange account
set selectedMessages to (current messages)
repeat with suspectMessage in selectedMessages
set theSource to source of suspectMessage's contents
set lineCount to 1
set aParagraph to "not empty"
repeat until aParagraph is ""
set aParagraph to paragraph lineCount of theSource
set lineCount to lineCount + 1
end repeat
set newSource to ""
repeat with i from lineCount to count of paragraphs of theSource
set newSource to newSource & paragraph i of theSource & return
end repeat
set theNewMessage to make new outgoing message with properties {source:newSource}
move theNewMessage to sent items folder of myExchangeAccount
set read status of theNewMessage to read
delete suspectMessage
end repeat
end tell
---- cut here ----
Hope this helps!

Indeed it does help! Thanks for posting. This is a great solution until MS gets its act together and issues a fix for Entourage.
EDIT: Looking back at this thread, I can't believe I started it in 200 7 and Entourage still exhibits this behaviour!

Thank you so much for this script! This is huge! At the time I originally posted I did not know about the double sending of messages via imap setup. This is the closest thing that we have to a working solution w/out MS' help.

Sadly, the problem is not in Entourage, but in Exchange Server 2003. Entourage 2004 or 2008 doesn't exhibit this behavior with Exchange Server 2007. Outlook has a work-around for the bug in Exchange Server 2003, but Entourage doesn't. It would be nice if Microsoft had updated Exchange Server 2003 with a patch.
The organization I work for hasn't yet rolled out Exchange Server 2007.
Cheers,
Ashok

Hi -
I'll try to help you troubleshoot this. Can you tell me which version of Entourage you use? The scripting commands supported by Entourage 2004 and 2008 are not all the same.
Thanks,
Ashok
