I never paid much attention to the application permissions, so, i cant tell, how it was setup previously, but, when I yesterday installed google maps 4.0.x,, i was amazed that the program want full access to everything on my phone, including phone, key injection, etc. etc.
Including many things which are completely unrelated to the function of maps.

i then set the permissions to soemthing appropriate by guessing what should be ok, and alle things I suspect as unneccesary to "ask".

However, the program refuses to start, and asks again to get 100% access to all functions.

I then deleted it from the BB.

I think this is a bad idea to refuse to start without full permissions - this makes me suspicious.

Does anyone know, where I can read how, and, what information google maps will send to the mothership ?

Right, paranoid.

I would not mind, if the application starts, and, later complain - cant do this, cant do that.

Prevouis versions asked kindly "would like to give google apps permissions to..."

But, it insists in getting all permissions prior to start. This is unusual, there is no application for the BB i know, which behaves like this.

I ran into this problem too. I'm a fairly new BES administrator, and my users are starting to complain about this.

On a test phone, I tried to "Allow" all, but there are certain connections (i.e. Phone, Location GPS, Company Network, Carrier Internet) that won't let me "Allow" them. They will only let me set them to "Prompt" or "Deny". Why is this?

I thought it might be a Security Policy setting, but I put a test phone in a blank policy and it still wouldn't let me "Allow" these permissions. Any suggestions?

Blank doesnt mean neccessarily none, the phone might have defaults,
also, the policy does not manage application permissions.

I just ran into the same problem with Google Maps. It does seem very suspect, though it has not driven me to uninstall the App, yet. I'd feel better if I understood what these permissions were. One in particular is troublesome to me - Recording.

What does the Recording permission do? It is located in the Interactions group of permissions. What would an App like Maps need to use it for?

Is that what allows the speech recognition use the microphone?

I tried denying one of the permissions and my 9000 went into an endless reboot loop. Not a very friendly way of operating. But I did the an OS upgrade out of the deal. Off to update my profile now.

Maybe, in google maps they forgot to remove some code which records your voice ? Its closed source, and you dont know what is sent back to the company.
Therefore you have the application permissions, which wil notify you, if something happens you dont like.

An application which by default insists in deactivating this built in securtiy mechanism (it will not launch if you dont grant trusted status) is suspicious.

Google is a profit orientated company. First comes the profit, second the customer.
Since its "free" the customer is not able to take influence on the profit (of course, the real customers have influence, but, these are not you, but the companies which pay for google services). He even has not the status of a consumer, only is a resource/guinea pig, which is exploited to maximize profit.

No wonder, the software developer tries all kinds of experimental stuff, and, since guinea pigs do not have the same rights as real customers, the final code is not checked as thorougly as it should be done.
