Is there a way to turn bbm off, but still use the internet as weel as receice emails? Thanks

No. You can't "turn off" BBM. You might be able to uninstall it from the device, however, depending upon what version you have.

Curious as to why you want to turn it off. Why not just ignore it?

Seems kind of nuts that you can't ignore contacts, or shut off BBM...you can on most other IM's. I always wondered why RIM doesn't allow this functionality on BBM.

You can ignore contacts on BBM, it asks you if you wish to ignore when you delete them from your list.

You cannot ignore current contacts in BBM. That option only offers the option to ignore future invites.

Yes, and since you cannot send a msg to someone who is not on your list, once you have them on ignore future invites and have deleted them, there is no way for them to contact you via BBM. right?

Thought the point was to ignore a contact on BBM. Ignoring a contact means not receiving a msg from them. Works the same as Gtalk. Instead of ignore, they call it block. Doesn't really matter if that is not what the two users want. It's all that can be done with BBM if you want someone to stop msging you. Not sure if you can call RIM and ask them to block a PIN, but for the average user. There is little choice.

On most other IM's you can block particular contacts, then unblock at will. On BBM, once you delete them off your list, you have to re-invite them...and in the meantime, if their PIN happened to change, you have to try via e-mail, which usually doesn't work -- it's not a seamless "ignore/block" like other IM's.

BTW, you CAN block specific PIN messages on your device - it's done through the firewall and it's easy. You can also block e-mails, texts MMS, etc...through the same technique. There are some downsides to using that technique, but if you do want to block a PIN msg from certain people, that's where it's done. You CAN'T however block BBM's through the firewall, at least not up until OS7.

Can we move on now? This thread is rapidly moving downhill...

snoxr500...the simple answer....

BBM is like your text messages, same principal. You can only get rid of folks texting or BBMing you by deleting them from your contacts.

Where you can log out of email, or set them to not come to your mobile........you cannot do the same with your text service and you cannot do it with your BBM service. Both will always come though to your phone. Both are always active.

Well, I can't block a specific PIN. I can block all incoming and create exceptions with my contacts or phone numbers or specific PINs.

I guess the only thing left you can do, is to remove that contact PIN from your contact list and then turn on the firewall to allow only contacts. That would work. I was able to block texts this way from one specific contact.
