Default Moving BES 4.1 to a new server in same domain.

Please Login to Remove!

Our BES server is getting a bit tired, and we have started to refresh our entire domain to Server 2008.

I'd like to move/migrate my BES 4.1.6.9 to a new 2008 server (in same domain) then upgrade it to v5.

BES connects to a SQL2003 database on a seperate server and Exchange 2003 also on a seperate server.

I've searched for the best guide, but there seems to be many. If anyone could point me in the right direction, to which guide would be best it would be appreciated.

(after doing the move/migrate I plan to update to v5 and also move the SQL to a new 2008 database, and then move the users to a new Exchange 2007 server, looks like i will be busy)

Regards,

Edd...

There are several methods you can use. It all depends on what order you want to do it in.
My take: Install BES v5 on a new server with a new DB from scratch and then use the migration tool & transporter to move your users over. You'll have minimal downtime and a fresh install of BES and SQL to play with.

Oh right, so I can migrate from 4.1 to 5? When speaking to Vodafone (i knew they had no idea) they said I would have to migrate from 4.1 to 4.1 on a new server, install latest SP, then upgrade to 5!

No, you can contact RIM (if you have T-Support) and acquire a migration kit. The Transporter is available from the d/l site at Blackberry.com

Caution should be used if you plan on installing bes on the new server with the same SRP key as the old server. When i did that they locked the crap out of my SRP adn i had to call them to get it unlocked. I guess it is hard coded to a specific set of hardware.

YMMV but that was my experience when i just did this.

My experiences with transporter are that it is a fantastic tool and incredibly easy to use. The SRP locked problem should already be resolved though if you are upgrading to BES 5.0, as you would be getting BES 5.0 SRP from RIM I'm assuming.

If you contact RIM and ask them for a migration kit, they will provide you with a temp SRP so you dont get locked.
Firing up a server with the same SRP is essentially like crossing the streams in Ghostbusters. Egon says that's bad.
