Sprint GSM/CDMA Device
Please Login to Remove!
My Sprint rep came in today and claims that they will be releasing a CDMA Berry that will be GSM capable as well for overseas travel. This is the first I've heard of such a device. Has anyone else gotten this info or is my rep mis-informed.

Haven't heard, but it's sad that you doubt your rep...... can't he/she be trusted?

The closest that I've heard of is a CDMA/GSM device using BlackBerry Connect which should be out, hopefully, before year end.

If this were true (and it would make a lot of sense for Sprint to come out with such a device), I would line up outside the store to buy it!

I do know that the federal government has wanted just such a device for Homeland Security and other agencies.
Developing a multi-network device would ensure coverage no matter where you go. Here in Nebraska, CDMA rules the state. Cingular has coverage in quite a large area, but with CDMA (Alltel and Verizon) you get 99% of the state.
A few years ago, we had a multiple homicide at a bank robbery in Norfolk, Nebraska. FBI agents that helped investigate had communication problems because they were using Nextel (It worked great where their office was in Omaha, but had no service in Norfolk). In that case, a multi-network handheld would have been priceless.

I believe that Verizon carried a mult-network Samsung device at one time, but it wasn't a converged device, just a phone...still the precedent is there....

Oh, man! Now I can't wait for this device to come out. This is the first I hear of the "Logan" Blackberry. What will be its form factor? SureType or full QWERTY?

It will need a battery upgrade to support 2 radios. How will this thing handle a live switch while on a call from GSM to CDMA?

I met with my Sprint/Nextel rep yesterday. He was showing me the various Nextel models, and one of the handouts he had showed the 8700 series in Q3, and an 8700 series GSM capable devise in Q4/2007. He didn't know exact dates, but thinks these will be Sprint devises.

Sprint CDMA and GSM Blackberry
The Sprint phone will operate on the CDMA network and when you go INTERNATIONAL then you have to add something to you phone plan to activate the GSM part. A SIM card would used for this. Sprint has this worked out a the WORLD (samsung) phone. It will not switch between CDMA and GSM in the U.S.

Although we do know that you can perform an IMEI unlock on this phone and pop a GSM SIM in it and use it. Many nextel only forums explain how this can be done. I gave my brother my i930 when the 8700c came out. Man I love this 8700. Wish it was on Nextel though.

FYI guys, the Sprint reps may be talking about the new "samsung" slider , the i830, which is the same as the verizon's, only instead of wifi, it has the gsm capabilities for international roaming. You can check it out on engadgetmobile and other gadget and mobile phone sites.
Though, im not implying that it isn't impossible, blackberry will release a hybrid network phone in the "future" (note i say future as in maybe several years from now), but i think i wouldn't trust any reps, as smartphones to them are all the same. I know my rep is an idiot, which is why i only deal with his boss lol.
