Verizon called me and asked me to try out the Storm for a month.

My month is up, and I returned it.

The last OS I used was .114 hybrid.

PROS:

• Screen is to die for
• Like the design / sexy device
• Like the weight / feel
• Touchscreen navigation is really cool for some things
• The Nuance voice dial software is actually good
• Love the menu key context sensitive select function
• Google Maps rocks on the Storm
• Lots of cool apps available
• EVDO Rev A is definitely faster

CONS:

• No physical keyboard (ultimately a fatal flaw in my book)
• Touchscreen keyboard has serious flaws
• Text correction is often times more an annoyance than assistance
• Cursor location / text selection is abysmally bad (even in .114)
• Bugs, bugs, bugs
• Spontaneous reboots
• Freezing
• Erratic accelerometer
• Most cool apps are more eye candy than anything
• Is generally unproductive for getting common tasks done
• Relative to the iPhone, Storm touchscreen interface and behavior is clunky and unpolished
• Sluggish lock/sluggish/erratic unlock
• Very laggy
• Poor battery life
• Poor telephone audio quality (people constantly complained about "muffled" sound)
• Selecting certain items can be frustrating at times
• The time/date selector in the calender is borderline impossible to use

In conclusion, when it comes down to it, I am accustomed to hyperproductivity from my Blackberry.

The Storm greatly sacrifices "get it done" productivity for the sexy touchscreen, and the half-baked nature of the firmware is unforgivable.

This may be a great device someday, but that day is not today...

I once thought that my Storm's keyboard was flawed too.

Then, I realized that it was my fingers that were flawed. I wasn't pressing the right keys.

I'm just as fast today on my Storm, as I was on my Curve.

I'm using my own version of the .114 Hybrid, and I'm experiencing none of the erratic behavior you've mentioned.

Maybe you just had a bad device? (Or I have a really good one?)

You're right in that the Storm's better days are ahead, but not here yet.

Although there was certainly an adjustment period, I'm now faster on my Storm than I was on my 8830. Quite a bit faster.

Also, although I agree the accelerometer is quirky at times, I haven't really experienced any of the other problems you mentioned. I'm sorry you had such a negative experience.

this device definitely takes a little time getting used to. It's a shame that users need to have patience to use the storm, but we all agree that day will come. I'm down to wait for it, too

Yeah it gets better everyday. It really took about three months before I felt comfortable, yes I miss the 8830 keyboard but I love the full screen. It's a love hate relationship and I'm in it for the long run not thanks to Verizon but thanks instead to the leaked operating systems out there!

Why do you use .114? .114 is beta release, of course all beta's are buggy. If you would install .113 you would'nt have any complain.

I am accustomed to hyperproductivity from my Blackberry (always have been... since way back when I used the 950) and get it from my trusty Storm.

YMMV but I will NEVER give up my STORM

My negatives are mostly FACTUAL based on direct experience, so they can't be "wrong."

You must be really slow on the Curve, if you type as fast on the Storm.

You need to check your facts before you post. You are wrong.

But I would be really interested in a link to officially released .113 code (ha!).

The last official code release is far buggier than .99, .103, .109, .114, or any of the hybrids.

(there is no .113 by the way)

This OP, I believe, has had good reasons to like and dislike the Storm...so I can understand. And if the niagra comes to verizon...than that would probably be his best bet for next bb..

Hehe anything over .75 would qualify as a Beta release... But .114 hybrid is pretty good in my book.

Was the battery life still poor in .114? What are you comparing the battery life to? Other touch screen devices? If so, which ones?
The muffled voice quality was addressed in another post. You have to disable enhanced audio option in phone settings apparently.
Your review goes over most of the contention points with this device, but it seems like you didn't have a lot of patience with the device. There is however, the arugment that you shouldn't need to have patience with a device. :p

-Out of curiousity, does this lack also means the iPhone is fatally flawed (in your book) as well? I know we doing a bit of a "apples to oranges" comparison with the 2 devices, but if your opinion of a "fatal flaw" means simply that you didn't care for the absence of a physical keyboard - I think there are many iPhone (and even perhaps Storm users as well) who would disagree with you.

I sold a 8830 World Phone because I didn't care for the spacing on the physical keyboard - with big hands, it made it incredibly difficult for me to type anything longer than one or two words. I wouldn't say this necessarily makes it "fatally flawed" in my book or anyone elses. My opinion is merely that its different strokes for different folks.

if you don't like having a touchscreen vs a physical keyboard, it should have been evident with a little bit of testing at the store... Although there is a bit of a learning curve with the storm keyboard, after which it actually feels like a regular keyboard to me. I don't even think twice about it anymore.

A note on battery life, I am very happy with mine after some work on it. My friend and I both have storms, and we went to the Indy exhibition/practice at Barber this weekend. We both went fully charged (he's lock stock and barrel, I'm on the 114 hybrid) and I listened to radio all day took photos and videos, texts, and calls, whereas he did the same, but minus the radio. At the end of the day, 5ish, I was at 65% battery, and he was at 20%.

I am very happy with mine.
