I, too, would advocate an upgrade because that will probably fix the issue.
What I typically do when I upgrade the handheld OS version is uninstall the Handheld OS software from my computer (on my Windows XP computer it shows as "BlackBerry v4.2.1 for the 8700 Series Wireless Handheld"; yours will probably show as "BlackBerry v4.1.0 for the 8700 Series Wireless Handheld") and then install the new version. This way you shouldn't be prompted to do the Repair/Modify/Remove option.
Once you install the new version (4.1.0.346 is the latest supported version for T-Mobile I believe) and connect your BlackBerry to the computer I believe the Desktop Manager will launch and prompt you to go through the upgrade process. If you use a later version (like the 4.2.1.96 I am using) you will need to follow the instructions in the sticky note at the top of the 8700 thread in regards to the newest version. There are some extra steps you need to take.
I also recommend making a backup prior to starting the procedure, even though the upgrade process can restore the data. Better safe than sorry.
