BES Express Thoughts?
Please Login to Remove!
My company is considering switching to BES Express as some of our users have opted to switch to Droid powered devices. I've taken a look at RIM's BlackBerry Comparison Chart here:
http://na.blackberry.com/eng/service...1610_vCH_2.pdf
and have talked to sales, but thought I'd check here, also. My understanding of the main differences are: - Client and server software for BESX are free
- Handhelds only require a data plan to be activated on BESX, not a 'premium' BES data plan
- BESX Can be installed on the same box as Exchange
- No limit on the number of devices that can be activated (excluding installation on SBS)
- BESX Has far fewer IT policies
- BESX Does not support BlackBerry MVS
- BESX Does not support high availability
I also gathered that the support levels and pricing are exactly the same.
If anyone would like to chime in with their thoughts, corrections, suggestions, etc., I'd appreciate it. Thanks

Wireless activation - that's a deal breaker for me. In a single office environment, it's probably not that big of a deal, but for remote workers, it's a pain to get them up and running.

Thanks for the replies. No wireless activation? For me, that might be a deal breaker, as well. We have a lot of remote users and typically activate their handhelds and send them to the field, but $$ may trump my wishes. TargetIT, Can you elaborate on the activation process? I'll do some more research in the meantime.
Again, I appreciate the feedback.

You can do wireless activations with BES Express, but it requires the Enterprise BlackBerry Data Plan to be provisioned on the user's mobile account.
If the user only has a BIS data plan, then you can only activate via USB.

BES EX 5.0.1-5.0.2 will work with regular BIS provisioning ( running BESeX5.0.2 myself) wor maild delivery and OTA activation.
If BESAdmin account is setup properly with permissions there should not be issue with activation from BES side.
Activation work on same way as full BES
BBI send ETP message to user mailbox, which is picked up by BES picking up and checking for email and password. You can use transpoter tool to move users from old BES to new one
Transporter tool will not work on BES Express 5.0.1. Only on BES ex 5.0.2

No, that's not entirely true.
You need the enterprise PROVISIONING service book to do a wireless EA, and that doesn't get pushed to the handheld with a BIS data plan.
Sometimes that service book is on the handheld out-of-the-box, but not always.

????????????????????????????????????????????????
If you dont have enterprise activation service book go to
Options>advanced options>host routing table> BB key> register now
That will send you missing service book for EA
Next:
If you have regular consumer data plan
Activation will work
I have BES Express 5.0.2 my self and I activated 2 devices OTA

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I queried RIM sales and they inform me that wireless activations will work on BESX only with the BES data plan. Either way, since we'd be saving money on the server and cals, I would think that we would continue to add that plan to all devices we roll out. So, it should be a non-issue.
Any other 'gotchas' anyone can point out? I'm assuming that BESX and Exchange co-exist with no problems. We're running Exchange 2007 on a Windows 2008 box.
Thanks again.

If us have Enterprise activation in device service book
you will be ok to activate
Try with regular data plan before you buy BES provisioning
As I said, I had activated two devices here in Ontario which have regular data provisioning
BES provisioning is double the price of regular prosumer provisioning
if you have larger number of devices x 12 months you can save big$$$ on that
for Ex2007 you will be ok
Cheers

The consumer blackberry data plan does not always provide the PROVISIONING service book which is required for a Wireless EA.
I don't know how else I can make this any clearer to you.
If your wireless carrier supplied the PROVISIONING service book with a consumer data plan... then that's great for you. You are the exception to the rule, not the norm.
Most wireless carriers do not push this service book unless you have the Enterprise data plan.

One more question everyone. If I chose to go without the BES data package on phones and perform a tethered activation, am I physically tethering to the server, or am I tethering to the computer on which I'm running the BAS interface?

BB-Tech-Support,
The issue with your suggestion is that it relies on an unsupported function. At any time, the carrir can stop sending the EA service book to a BIS only device. Not an issue for local workers, but if the boss is on the road and his BB gets reset and he can't re-activate, well I would not want to be in your shoes.
Bottom line is that if OTA activation is a required feature, then get a BES plan.

75 users max when installed on the mail server.
You need a dedicated box for BES Express for more than 75 up to 2000 per BES box with max of 10000 users for the database.

Exactly - in our case the CALs were already purchased, so no savings going to Express. Through our carrier we got a free upgrade that included 10 CALs as well.

Publish Web Desktop manager and users can activate if they have a USB cable with them. USB cables are availble in most stores these days.

"I don't have a slot where it will fit. Oh wait, maybe here?"
"I bought one but it doesn't fit my phone - mine is skinnier"
"What do you mean one sec - I already hit next?"
"My computer sounds like it's playing pinball - is that normal?"
Yeah, no thanks.
