While I was flying back from Chicago few days ago I decided to do a little test. I preloaded BB Maps to be able to see the map of the states. Then while on the plane I started my Holux and BB Maps to track my position. It worked

Officially: Highly against FAR's (Federal Aviation Regulations)! The GPS puck is a receiver and the Bluetooth transmits and receives.....

Unofficially: With that being said, SWEET!!! I'm surprised the puck would pick up enough satelites through that little window. That means you'd have to take a window seat, though....ick! Just don't let the Flight Attendant catch you!

I thought about it before. But i am in the nyc area... And if someone saw me doing that or attaching some type of bluetooth puck to a window with a blue light.... lights out for real. Its not worth it.... with the 8900 it will be worth trying though.

Yeah, I was on a lufthansa flight recently and they specifically said bluetooth devices such as wireless mouses and earpieces were verbotten.

I was tempted to scan for devices to see if I could fly the plane remotely from my seat (o for up, i for down, 8/6/2/4 for course)... ;^)

I tried this a while back on a flight from Chicago to Denver, but couldn't get my Cellink BTG-7000 puck to aquire any sats.

I loaded the BB Maps before I entered the plane. If you load them and change the zoom to see the area you'll be flying above you don't need reception.

Another thing I noticed while flying. I use Holux and I have to get the satellites before I get on the plane. For some reason if I don't have the satellites' position fixed there is no way to do it while flying. So I get the position fixed before I enter the plane and then I don't turn off my Holux.

GPS receivers need a stronger signal to aquire the satellites than to maintain them. One of the curious things about the Phase Locked Loop circuits used to sync the GPS receiver to the satellite frequency is that once locked, the signal can actually drop below the noise level and not only remain locked, but still produce usable data. For this reason, PLLs are widely used in electronic circuits.

i had the gps turned on the other day while flying to Chicago...we had a massive tail wind....624 mph. On the way home.....424 was the highest.
