How do you get google maps to use the GPS on the 8800? I see no option. I just installed it so i am running the 1.4.4 version that is suppose to be built for the 8800. I get no MAP IT option with Google installed but when i had the other from Cingular it did.... I have removed the other and then google and then reinstalled google from scratch but still nothing....Ideas??

Google maps doesn't support the 8800 GPS. Try Infoseek Find It, do a seach on this forum for more information. Google does support GPS for other devices so we're hoping they add the 8800.

Seems promising since it's free until 2008, but the interface is incredibly difficult to use, as it looks like a port from a mobile phone. It depends on being able to push the green and red phone keys to answer certain questions, but that's not possible on a BB, of course. It also doesn't support the menu key. I haven't figured out how to close it yet, as the confirm close dialog requires the use of the Green key.

I'm also not sure that it supports the internal GPS -- it says it does, but I don't have a fix. I'll play with it during the day and report back.

In most cases, pressing the pearl functions as Yes (Green) and pressing escape functions as No (Red).

I'm pleased to report that Nav4All does support the 8800 internal GPS and it does do routing.



I will post some comments over in the GPS forum, as they won't be 8800 specific.

Mapquest Navigator is free and another GPS option. Just pick a carrier and device -- it really doesn't matter what you tell it you have as I have it running just fine on my 8800.

i cannot get the Mapquest software to acquire a GPS satellite signal. It just keeps searching endlessly. I have gotten BBMaps to work so all my settings should be good, i also made sure to allow GPS connectivity under the application permissions. What am i missing??

BBmaps works but works really poorly -- at least in my experience.

Ghostrida - I'm not sure in your case. I didn't do anything to get Mapquest working. I am on BES and using O2's latest OS for the 8800 so either or both of those could be relevant differences...

I second that. Never been a big fan of BBMaps. Very clunky GPS navi application.

Nav4All looks promising. I believe it has "live" position GPS so you can walk around a city and see your position without refreshing the GPS. But the user interface is really screwy. It obviously was not made specifically with the Blackberry in mind. Menu options should pop up with the Menu key, not close up the program. Just a mess. When scrolling around the map, if you go beyond the screen instead of automatically downloading the next map area it constantly asks you if you want to do so. What's the point of that??!

Telenav needs some refinement, but so far it's the best option I've tried. I'd like to see it place POI's on your map like TomTom does. Adding WiFi Hotspots to the POI list would be nice. And of course live positioning.

I loaded the MapQuest Navigator as suggested below and it works great so far on the 8800. I selected Sprint and the 8703 model.

I have not used TeleNAV, but this looks very comparable and is free for the moment.

SO which map app is the best? and works with a Cingular BB 8800

I have several installed and here's my opinion....

TeleNav is the best so far. You have to pay monthly but then if your like me and have the ability to have the company pay it as part of your cell bill, it's no big deal. What I really like is that it's integrated into my address book. I can simply look up a customer by name and viola, map/route right to him.

MapQuest, I just installed and like it a lot from what I've seen so far. The bummer is that in the short time I've used it, I can't see that it's at all linked to my contact book. Perhaps I'll learn differently.

BBMaps. Great for walking around town, but with no real Navigation, it's simply mobile mapping with nice graphics.

Google Maps. Same deal, not yet linked to be used as a Navigation tool other than manually following along. That's fine, but I need a true GPS navigation tool. Very cool graphics and having satellite images is very nice.

So many nice options and all but one are free.
