Question Case Magnet & Credit Cards, Problem?

Please Login to Remove!

newbie disclaimer, did my search on credit cards, magnets etc., nothing showed up on this topic

See this story about the Sidekick wiping out the credit card stripe here

Now it doesn't appear the magnet in the case (in my case, Fortte) isn't quite as strong, but it's still a magnet. I'm able to 'pull' an average paper clip up from my desktop from a height of 1" and when I put my phone on top of the microwave there's a noticeable pull.

So, do we have to be careful w/ regards to credit cards, work ids, etc. near the BB case(s)?

I raised this question before, and what I understood was, no. I was told the maganet wasn't quite strong enough to do any damage. But I'm not taking that chance

The speaker on my 7520 is 10 times stronger than the magnet in my case and I have never had it wipe a cc.

I would think that the RF energy of the network coordination handshakes would be worse than the holster Magnet for scrambling the data on a CC. It's not called Radio Frequency Electro-magnetic Force for nothing

My Fortte case's magnet disabled my hotel key (several times) recently. The biggest problem that caused was me having to walk around the building to the hotel's main lobby door to get back into the hotel. Also, I got a funny look from the desk clerk the second time it happened.

I use a magnetic money clip, which holds my cash & credit/debit cards. I've never had a problem using any of my cards.

Mythbusters did an episode on this subject. They threw the strongest magnet they could at the credit cards and it did nothing to them. The hotel key however, can be very easily wiped because they are usually reprogrammable.

I have missed some, but last night they had a mararthon. Good television. I think that would be a cool job to have.

I will second that. I don't know what the pay is but that would be the coolest place to work.... I always laugh at the show where Jamie sticks the vacuum motor up to his face and it sucks his lip into the motor and cuts it. I laugh because I can see myself doing something just as stupid without even thinking it through....

My favorite is where they both busted the myths about beating the breath-a-liser. They both got drunk as heck!

Myth Busters are awesome. I try to catch the shows I can. I found the "getting electrocuted from peeing on rail road track thinger" amusing.

And no, you can't get electrocuted. The urine stream breaks up causing it to not be connected. Ha.

As for the credit card thing...

Hotel keys have extremely weak magnetic strips. For reprogramming (as mentioned) and because they get lost or snagged by people. They are cheap. Most cell phones will clear them.

Credit cards are made with very strong strips. It takes a lot to mess them up. Usually they get deactivated because they get worn. Not really from magnets.

I would think a security card would fall somewhere in the middle.

Same thing happened to me!

Of course, I was being exceptionally bright that day and had both on the same side (at 3 oclock for the holster, and cards in a pocket).

I'm government service, and I swear I have 8 cards I use on a daily basis for everything to buy a soda to enter the building to using a computer. So, needless to say, when my factory 7130 case's magnet wiped my hotel card, I was a bit scared it took all of them.

Luckily, it seems to have just impacted the hotel(s) card(s).
