VZW tech couldn't solve it, so they gave me a new BB. Well, I put 4.2 on the new phone and the SAME problem is occurring.

What could be going on?
Not sure why you are having problems upgrading, but if they gave you a "new" BlackBerry, why didn't it have the new OS pre-installed?

Default Insert title here

Because it is a replacement 8703e in a sealed box, long before 4.2 existed.

Just received a new Vz BB and it had the old OS installed as well. And it wasn't a refurb. New 4.2 code from Vz caused it to be really laggy. The Telus code improved the speed some, but still laggy as compared to the 4.1 that originally came on it. Now to find somewhere with the old 4.1 that I can download it to go back to....

Rolled back to 4.1 last night and the phone works again. I will miss some of the cool features in 4.2 but will just wait for a new release or a new BB.

Default good 4.2 experience

My experience with the OS 4.2 upgrade has been quite positive. I love the usability improvements such as the ability to type a name directly from the home screen and have the BB return the appropriate phone numbers. This is a real time saver, bypassing the need to launch the address book.

I also am grateful for the ability to assign the middle button to the task switcher. For one handed operation this is a godsend.

As I've posted on a separate thread, I've noticed markedly improved Bluetooth connectivity with my Bluetooth headset, despite the many posts on these forums regarding problems with the 4.2 BT stack.

Certain third party apps also work much better, if you happen to have them installed. One such app, PocketDay works much more smoothly and adds features such as the ability to directly edit memos.

My biggest complaint is the inability to unlock the keyboard via the scroll wheel. This is a pretty big step backward, but given that OS 4.2 is optimized for trackball devices, I supposed it's to be expected.

Speed is an issue at times, but in my opinion, not even close to a dealbreaker. The Profile screen is slow to load and sometimes the home screen as well, but it hasn't significantly impacted my use. The new features and improved Bluetooth performance far outweigh these downsides.

Default 4.2 exp

I didn't experience any lagging, performance was fine.

However, on two 8703e's, I could not make outgoing calls reliably (CALLING...never connects) without cycling the BB on/off. I would love it if someone found a fix for this, evidently I am not alone. How could two BBs have the same exact issue?

Is there a possibility it could be something related to my laptop or DM?

Adding the Telus update to my deactivated verizon 8703e as we speak, to see if this alleviates some of the lagginess.

Default DM 4.2 on other computers?

If i'm away and want to upgrade my bberry 8703e, can i install the DM on the computer i have here, and run the software update on my bberry, then just delete the DM (it's not my computer) and install it again on my other computer when i get home? or will this mess up the bberry somehow? cause i know you have to deal with the vendor file in the folder system that comes with the DM...

I updated my sprint 8703e to 4.2 and all seemed fine until I couldn't activate on our BES. activation code wouldn't work. was getting error message on server. My IT guy is pretty smart, he wiped my handheld and tried again to no avail. Anyone else get this problem? My BIS worked. I ended up deleting 4.2 and reinstalling 4.1 and activation code worked and back on our BES. I really liked 4.2 too.
I used verizon would telus be better? (I did delete vendor file too)

Anyone else upgrade sprint 8703e and was able to reconnect with BES via OTA activation PW? One thing I did do was use my 4.1 DM to load 4.2. It all went OK without errors, but I did delete 4.1 and load 4.2SP2 so I think I'll reload 4.2 with Telus's OS and see if I can reconnect with BES

I figured I give the Telus v4.2 OS a try since the Verizon v4.2 OS was giving my Sprint 8703e issues with random reboots or blanking out but the problem still persists? Anyone else experiencing similar issues? Most of the time it happens while I'm using an application that requires a data connection like JiveTalk or the built-in web browser. If I downgrade back to Sprint v4.1 OS, the problems don't reappear. Oh well, I really enjoy the new features of v4.2 and will just wait it out till October when my contract expires and hopefully the Curve will be readily available and stable on Sprint.

The symptoms that were exhibited with the Verizon v4.2 OS still persists with the Telus v4.2 OS.

Bell just released their 4.2 update for the 8703e (4.2.1.186/4.2.1.110).

I highly doubt the Bell Mobility v4.2 OS will make a difference since the App version is the same at 4.2.1.110, just the package version changed from 4.2.1.184 to 4.2.1.186. Who knows though, perhaps the experts will chime in on what makes up the Pkg and App of the overall OS. I'm assuming it's the same, just the Pkg version gets upped when the make changes in the bundling, the applications are probably all the same version. Oh well, either way, I'll give it a try and see what's up since CDMA upgrades work for all carriers.

So far so good with the Bell v4.2 upgrade...seems a bit more laggy than Telus but I can deal with the lag versus the random reboots.

Hey seaneboyee - I used to have the Verizon 4.2 loaded up and it was okay. I saw the Bell v4.2 and couldnt resist thinking the 4.2.1.110 was going to make a difference over the 4.2.1.106 - So far same deal except for this morning I had a random reboot (which I've seen on 106 as well but very rare)just figured I'd chime in - thanks and I'll keep the forums informed. Take care ma fellow BB Addicts -

1. Device seems more sluggish when doing things like selecting applications, etc.

2. New Applications icon, which takes you to another Applications screen. This contains things like Gmail and other Google Services items, Blackberry Maps, Calculator, Beyond411, Quicknote, BBLight, Brickerbreaker (some of these are aftermarket items I already had, obviously). I don't like this setup - it now takes one more step to get to these applications.

3. New Media icon, which takes you to the Media screen (Ringtones and Pictures). You can now receive these things via Bluetooth. You can now go into media options and see what the file size is for each tone, picture, etc.
I see that my device has a 12MB memory limit.

4. New Tools icon, which takes you to the Tools screen, which contains Taks, MemoPad, Password Keeper, and Help.

5. New Settings icon, which takes you to the Settings screen, which contains E-mail Settings, Alarm, Screen/Keyboard, Mobile Network, Options, Set-up Bluetooth, and Turn Wireless Off.

6. Profiles menu looks different, and includes an Advanced menu choice, which takes you into the standard profile editor. Again, another step to impede you.

7. On the Verizon theme's red banner bar at the top (home screen), where the signal strength, battery level, Bluetooth, EVDO, and other indicators are, it sure looks like they've bumped up the font size of the day/date/time. Not alot, mind you, but at least it's a noticeable increase (unless I'm seeing things). If this is the case, I like it. I wish I could make it even bigger. (Maybe there's a way; I'm not done exploring.)

8. When the device locks, the Owner Info is now displayed in much smaller font. I don't know why they'd do this. I can't figure out if it's adjustable or not. Whatever...

9. In the Status screen (via options, or by simply pushing ALT, CAP, H in succession), the battery strength indicates 100%, but the battery level icon on the home screen shows 3/4 full. What's with this? I'll charge fully again and see what happens.

10. Some of the Blackberry ringtones, notifiers, alarms, etc. have changed. Some tones are gone, replaced by some new ones.

That's all I've noticed so far. I'm sure I'll discover other things, too. All in all, I don't see anything truly amazing. Perhaps I'm missing something. Others will certainly discover other items.
Yea, my BB seems to be sluggish as well... it also never shows more than 3/4 full on the battery meter, however when i go into options-> status it shows 100%... i don't think it's hurt my battery life so i'm not too worried about it; i'm sure they'll come out with a fix for that.

I'm just still waiting on verizon to make the 8703e compatible with VZ Navigator... anyone have an update on this?
