Which way should 8830 face in holster?
Please Login to Remove!
Hi,
Which way is the device meant to face in its OEM holster -- should it face backwards so that its front is entirely covered and protected, like my old 7250, or should it face forwards so that the LED light is visible?
Since the trackball is relatively delicate I'm especially interested in carrying it properly.
Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the BBF!
Is that a belt holster? Face it inwards, toward the clip or belt.

JS,
Thanks for the fast answer and the welcome.
Yes, it's a belt holster. I take it that it's not a problem that the trackball gets pressed down when in the holster?

well, is it a RIM OEM holster? There should be a track for the trackball in most RIM holsters, so it won't stay depressed. Feel in there, is it?

The OEM leather holster with swivel beltclip:
There is a "groove" inside the holster on both sides so you can insert your device, bottom first, with it facing towards you or facing away from you. The "groove" stops the ball from being pressed in while in the holster.

Thanks both,
I looked a little closer and found the grooves ... which also explains why the holster magnet seemed to be effective with the device facing either way.

thanks. older cases like for the 8700 and some 8800s were meant to face one way, inward, so I ask users to determine if their case indeed has the channels on both sides.

any way but keys outside and upside down, screen towards the clip can go right side up or backwards, facing away from the clip screen out, and up, upside down it will sleep the phone but the ball wont be in the case grove. that is if you use the blackberry leather case
i do keep the phone screen out, so if i do put the berry down in the case, i can see that i get new msg from the red blinking light, 8830 or my curve.

Personally, I stow mine face-in, for two reasons:
*to help protect the screen in the event I walk into a desk, countertop corner, whatever it may be
*when I pull the phone out with my right hand from the holster on my right side, I can immediately see the screen and am ready to take a call without having to flip the phone around. I don't wear a watch anymore because I always have an accurate clock handy. The belt clip is a bit geeky in my opinion, but I've worn it everyday now for about a year, and I'm over it.

The antenna should face away from your body. This ensures better reception and at the same time lowers the body SAR level / the amount of radiation your body absorbs. This is, of course, true for all cell-phones, not only the 8830. It's usually mentioned in the manual as well but RIM chooses not to include any kind of info on this for whatever reason.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with this reasoning.
1. The 8830 SAR measurement is well below the US and European standards for cell phone radiation and no study has yet proven that cell phone radiation has any negative effect on the human body. Stop perpetuating this myth.
2. If your reception is so crappy that turning the phone over on your hip makes a difference, you have coverage issues anyhow and face-in or face-out on your hip isn't going to matter.

Do you work for a carrier? Or for RIM? Seriously - whenever anyone says anything about minimizing one's exposure to this (or any other kind) of radiation, there are sure to be posts like yours. I'm not claiming in any way that cell phone radiation is harmful. If I thought that was the case, I sure as heck wouldn't be using a Blackberry which radiates pretty much constantly and most definitely not an 8820. I just simply fail to see the point of exposing myself to any kind of radiation more than I have to, no matter if it proves to be dangerous or not.
As for your claim about the 8830's being "well below European standards": I find this kind of odd, given the fact that there aren't any EV-DO networks in Europe and that the 8830 has never been approved by the CE and isn't sold anywhere here. Again - I'm not claiming it wouldn't be well below the limits but this just shows to me that you're simply trolling here.
It's a proven fact that reception is worse when more of the signal is absorbed by the body. And, as I said: many manufacturers include this information in their owner's manuals.

1. No, I don't work for a carrier. If you are going to worry about cell phone radiation, then you probably shouldn't use a radio, tv, microwave, cordless phone, bluetooth headset, satellite radio, 802.11x, either.
2. The 8830 SAR is .63W/kg, the 8820 is 1.16W/kg. The US maximum allowance is 1.6W/kg and the Europe maximum allowed is 2W/kg. Trolling? As Dawg would say, b**e me.

1. whatever man
2. The FCC and the CE don't measure the same way (per 1g body tissue in the US, per 10g tissue in most European countries). Results don't always translate.
But again: why subject yourself to higher amounts of radiation if you don't have to? And also (maybe you read it this time): I'M NOT CLAIMING cell phone radiation is harmful in any way. I simply don't want to be exposed to any kind of radiation more than I have to.

read my post: did I claim cell radiation is harmful?
But as a side-note: both the micro-wave and the sun are rather stupid examples as both emit radiation that (as opposed to cell phone radiation) IS very much harmful. Stick your hand into a micro-wave and turn it on or spend a couple of hours in the sun, nude without a sun-block. Get my point?

What, no mention of the radar guns cops use? Hello testicular cancer.
Speaking of which, I keep my BlackBerry in my pocket, oh no!
So back to the topic here, I really like the fact that when I use a belt clip holster I can face it anyway that I desire. Sometimes when I am in a hurry I just pick it up and pop it in, not paying any attention whatsoever to how its facing, but I know its still secure.
