Some people held off when the 8800 was released, and suddenly in a matter of days news arrived of the 8300. Perhaps if I pass on the 8300 that will accellerate the intro of the 9xxx Series....

my Rogers dealer told me yesterday that they put the 8300 into production early by accident....that it wasnt supposed to come out so soon after the 8800....this doesnt make a lot of sense to me....at the same time, it explains why its coming out so soon after the 8800....but even if it is true, why wouldnt they hold back the produced 8300's to sell more 8800s?

Your Rogers dealer is an idiot. Let's say that each handheld costs RIM $250 to make (considering that's what a carrier might sell it at with a contract that's probably not far off the mark), and RIM needs to build say 250,000 units for a launch on multiple carriers simultaneously (even with one carrier like Cingular, I'd expect at least 100K of units in stores for launch day) - that's means that RIM "accidentally" spent $62.5M to build units... yeah right.

Some people don't understand why RIM would sell both the 8800 and 8300 simultaneously - well, they're for different markets, and likely will be for different prices. The 8800 is clearly RIM's response to the MotoQ and Nokia E6x series of products and is aimed at business folks, whereas both the 8100 and 8300 are targeting consumers - it may seem silly for enterprise people who own a 7290 or 8700 for there to be two QWERTY BBs launched within a few months of each other, but these aren't just meant to be upgrade units - they're meant to attract current Treo or HTC or Sidekick users who have purchased these for individual use versus corporate use. I see this as less "poor micro management" on RIM's part and more of a big, big push on their part to get a larger slice of the mobile user pie. And looking at their ever-growing subscriber numbers it seems to be working.

An accident? Either you or your Rogers dealer is crazy. A company like RIM does not accidently put something like the 8300 into production. You should have slapped your Rogers Dealer for saying something so stupid!

It never ceases to amaze me at what some retail people will say. With a distinct lack of knowledge and very poor judgment they will make up stories which in their minds eye, make them look good. Anything to present themselves as something they are not, professional salespeople.

This "accident" theory is something that only the most gullible person would believe. I'm not suggesting that anyone in this forum is gullible, quite the contrary as most of us are well educated enough to know better. However the harm is when someone like this, tells these far fetched stories only to have someone believe them. At that point it reflects poorly on the Mfg, the Carrier, and anyone else the "story teller" implicates with such nonsense. It's this kind of information that's used to create rumors, the kind of time wasting, reputation damaging, misleading lies that result in nothing but negative, pointless conversation.

I agree. and in retrospect there was no point for me to post the story he told me...it just seemed "noteworthy" if nothing else, coming from the owner of a Rogers Wireless store...

I think you were right to post the story.

I agree that we need to hear about this type of thing just to remind us, and anyone else that reads this forum, of the way the store employees or in this case the owner of the store hands out misleading info. I happen to know that this and other BB forums are read by people at RIM and the various Carriers. It's a very valuable resource of customer feedback for those organizations, and they know it.

Here's my take on this! BG speculated that the 8300 could roll out as soon as 3 to 4 weeks, while this sounds crazy to alot us because of the 8800 just being released, it making perfect sense from a business point of view! RIM knows that the launch of the 8300 will raise them to the top of the food chain in the ever expanding world of smartphones and pda's. So what they do is roll out the 8800, and we all get excited about a new device launch and buy one. Then BOOM, they drop the 8300 series on our lap. They know that along with the rest of the world, alot of us are going to go out and pick up the 8300 when just weeks ago we already got the 8800. They'll have there loyal following along with a slew of new people just drooling over the idea of a BLACKBERRY with a camera and a full keyboard. Classic sales tactics to draw more unit sales. We could all sit around and be mad at RIM for tricking us, but at the end of the day alot of us are going to go out and pick up the 8300 the day it comes out!
