While I agree with Mark and crew that the Rogers cap needs to be raised, here are some interesting facts:

Existing Rogers customers on the $60/25MB BlackBerry plan use, on average, 2.1 MB of data per month. Even the top 10% of users only average 9 MB per month. In fact, less than one half of one percent of customers on the $60/25MB plan exceeds the 25MB bucket. While customers using the 8700r device use slightly more data, they are still, on average, well below the 25 MB (average use among 8700r customers is 3.3 MB with barely 1% using more than 25 MB in a given month)

i dont know how that makes sense, just loading this forum on the blackberry is about 200-300KB of data. load it a few times (im sure you can pull that off in 2 minutes) and you are already at 1mb. multiply that by 30 days and bottom line: you are screwed

I do know that BlackBerry's compression is very very good but I am not privy to the technical details. Any data you can bring up on your pc while browsing is very different than the amount of data your bb will use viewing the same site.

Also I would say that not alot of people use the web browsing on their bb's, I doubt a large portion use any sort of 3rd party program either. That is probably why there are not a large percentage of people going over their 25mb limit. I've heard it before but Rogers is in the process of changing their data plans to accomodate power users as they will become more and more prevalent with 8700 and future devices.

i was just talking from experience. a few days ago i was sitting around with nothing to do so i pulled out the 8700 and went to this site. each time i went through the menus it would load another 100KB-300KB depending on what was on the page. with java enables and scripts running its much worse, not to mention pictures. im sure that within about 5 minuts i must have reloaded atleast 10 times to read new threads, 10x150kb = over 1MB. thats just 5 minutes. so if i use it 5 minutes a day for 30 days im already over the limit. im still within rogers 3 months of unlimited and the first 12 days of usage i had about 46megs ... and i really didnt even use it much, mostly just random browsing every once in a while and email.

bottom line is i am not goint to change my habits just because someone wants to grab as much money from me as they can -- why buy a convenience good and just stare at it?, thats why im getting a tmobile sim with the international plan.

Point taken. Although the BlackBerry does some caching, so you are not loading 100-300 kb everytime unless you are clearing your cache everytime.

well problem is i think its mostly from the advertisments, but they change all the time. i'd disable images and scripts but that just defeats the purpose, i woulda got an older cheaper bb if i wanted that. what other point is there in EDGE?

I still don't understand how someone, even with the EDGE network, could top 25mb a month on their bberry. That's a lot of websurfing if you ask me, or opening huge files from attachments.

So to you people that are jumping over that 25mb limit, how are you doing it?

read over my posts and im sure you can make sense of it , also im constantly connected to several im clients that tend to drain alot of data.

yeah but the im clients are buyer beware IMHO. I hate rogers, absolutely loathe them, but it's fairly common knowledge that IM's, specifically the web-based ones, slam your data rates.

When we're talking strictly work related (emails) I can't imagine how one would top 25mb.

I use google local + internet on a regular basis daily and I haven't topped the 25mb plan yet, though I haven't had my first bill on EDGE yet.

When Mark answers he will mention a multitude of 3rd party programs including Idokorro Mobile SSH and chat programs. Or those people that use their BB as a modem on their laptop occasionally.

are you browsing through wap or normal internet? WAP is around 10kb per page.

just loaded the www.blackberryforums.com on my bberry. 69kb per page. this was through normal internet, not the wap site.

It also has to do with generation I believe. Typically BB users are older and in a fast paced environment. They use probably only 20% of what the BB has to offer and they dont have the time nor the technical aptitude to play around with 3rd party programs, web browsing etc. As the BB's become more mainstream they will become more affordable so younger people have already started getting BB's and immediately look to personalize it and get as many toys on it as they can. That in tandem with EDGE, people are beginning to find new uses for them. Very similar to Dial up to broadband. Only those hardcore young geeks, not excluding myself, were on BBS' and IRC on dialup, older folks or even the public in general didnt find a use for internet. When broadband came out and came down in price alot of the general public all of a sudden found things they could then do on the internet.

well im definetely one of the younger ones who loves to use the device for everything it was made to do. if i just wanted to keep up with my email id never get an 8700, theres just no point.

so i suppose yes i am not in the general mainstream, but am still only using the product for what it was built to do. using it to its full potential will definetely kill the 25 megs in no time.

i do often use the normal browser, get atleast 50 emails a day with attatchments and pictures. not to mention the im programs. googletalk is running 24/7 , google local is going all the time when navigating, and i even use it for my laptop connection when there is no wifi around.

so as i said i admit im not in the mainstream, but in the end rogers is still literally capping the features of the 8700

Yah I think based on the above percentages, assuming they are accurate, there are propeller heads, but in relation to everyone else we are a rare breed.

They should be advertising $60/25MB.
Then everyone else could go to Bell Mobility and pay $60 for 500MB (20x more)

As the technology gets cheaper and cheaper and faster and faster (i.e. $99 EVDO 7250's from Bell) people will use more and more bandwidth intensive applications.

If I subscribe to an unlimited plan.. I don't EVER want to see a single penny more charged. Period.

I think with the launch of the 8700 they stopped advertising it as an unlimited plan, but I am not certain of that. I may be out to lunch.
