Come on.....That's just implict. Verizon wouldn't sell a phone that you couldn't talk on....

Corey,

I know that. My point was simply that bbswany's snide remark, his posted graphic, and the conclusions he drew from it were, well, a waste of bandwidth. A list of "specifications" that doesn't list CDMA is not (in my mind) a list to be taken as gospel, if you see my point. And now, you yourself have posted info you said you got from talking to RIM directly that refutes the conclusion bbswany jumped to from that graphic.

Not really, because the graphic is true. The Storm does have all 4 bands of GSM. Verizon has just made an agreement with RIM to have the North America GSM bands disabled.

So perhaps the easier question... if I am able to obtain an UNLOCKED Storm, it should work nicely on my Sprint network, being CDMA and all. If this phone doesn't come to Sprint, Sprint has some explaining to do.

From my understanding, there are no unlock codes for CDMA, only GSM...someone correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't use a Verizon phone on Sprint's network.

And, the Storm will not come to Sprint. At least not for a couple years, or how ever long the contract is between RIM and Verizon.

Unlocking isn't an option with CDMA devices. Because they do not operate on SIM cards , the ESN numbers (The CDMA eqiviliant to IMEI's) have to be activated on your Sprint account for the device to function. Sprint would be unable to activate the Verizon Storm because it isn't one of their ESN's.

Sprint sucks. I've been with them for 12 years, my wife and I have a great plan with them, both enjoying our BB's... not a TON of complaints but the lack of cutting edge phones, especially from RIM, is pissing me off! My 8703 is nice but I'm envious of my wifes Curve (easy fellas) and was hoping for something NEW like the Bold or Storm sometime in the next 6 months. I really don't want to switch carriers but Sprint isn't helping me want to stay.

Injuries and a D that read too many press clippings in the offseason.

So, I checked and I can't upgrade till July, otherwise I have to pay full pop for the storm. Does anyone know where I can buy a new storm for Verizon cheaper than buying it from Verizon directly?

The Verizon price of $519.99 is probably the cheapest you're going to find a Storm if you can't do an upgrade.

That's actually a very cheap 'full retail' price for the Storm. I remember when the 8700 came out, it was $799.99.

A call to RIM has cleared things up.

9500 and 9530 are the exact same devices with different features enabled/disabled. The 9500 has the CDMA/EVDO functions disabled, while the 9530 has the North America GSM functions disabled. So, yes the Storm does have Quad-band GSM and CMDA/EVDO; however, it depends on what version you have as to what carriers are possible.

Morale of story: You cannot use a 9530 on US GSM carriers because the North America GSM function is disabled. You need to use an unlocked 9500.
Well, I beg to Differ...

I have had multipe presentations from RIM and Verizon, including a Lauch Event at Lincoln Financial field (including pictures and attendance of Kevin Curtis of the Eagles) tonight put on by Verizon, Rim and Lucent. A Life Science and Health Care event in Atlantic City, NJ earlier this month, and on site visits by reps covered under NDA's in Sept and October...

Each presentation they stress CDMA, plus QUAD BAND GSM... i.e. two North America and two Europe frequencies... plus UMTS2100.

They even go as far as stating while the 8830 is dual band GSM (europe only), the Storm is Quad.

Each presentation, they have stopped short of saying it will be SIM unlocked out of the box, or if it wil follow the 8830, where after the device is in service 90days, they will give you the unlock code.

Well, since it was a joint RIM/Verizon presentation to national managers, I trust the maker of the device than some person who mocked my comment again and again. The comment wasn't snide. Another member was stating false information in an unprofessional matter and he needed to be corrected. And what other conclusion could I have possibly deduced?? It states in plain English what the device will be carrying on board. It wasn't a waste of bandwidth. There is so much confusion on radios are on the device. I'm was merely setting the record straight.
This device was designed from the beginning to be QUAD BAND GSM in addition to CDMA bands.
I apologize if you feel like EvDO isn't true CDMA, but like Corey said, it's pretty implicit that the device will come with compatible Verizon bands.

I never said it wasn't Quad Band GSM. I was told by RIM that the agreement made with Verizon would be that the North America GSM bands would be locked so that you couldn't use the Storm on another US carrier.

We'll just have to wait until tomorrow to see what the truth is behind all of this.

Personally, I'm going with the Bold. The Storm lacks a bunch of features that the Bold supports.
1) No US GSM 3G.
2) No WiFi.
3) No Multi-Tasking. (Talking while sending email or surfing the web).

My point exactly. Just because it has the hardware in there does not mean that you can jump to the conclusion that it will be usable.
