I talked to our admin, and he said the link at the top was for BIS-based devices, and for our network and setup, we needed the other one, the one I linked. I am updating as we speak, so we will see.

Personally, I dont think there is a difference, but eh, he is supposed to be our BB expert... If it messes up, it is on his head to fix, not mine. I just get a quiet day away from the BB.

Update!

New software went on fine. I show a new icon on the screen at the top looks like a +)). It is next to the BT icon. I am assuming this is the GPS icon. Other than having to get the VZN Nav, is there something else I can use to test the GPS to see if it is actually turned on?

That icon has always been there for me. It mean Location On for E911 location finder.

I know this is an old issue, but I have missed so many phone calls and other notifications because of this phone...I need to get rid of it ASAP.

Isn't there something we can do about this? Class action lawsuit? BBB?

Does anyone know why this issue hasn't been fixed yet? I call Tech Support, and they pretend that nothing is wrong with the volume of the phone.

Ok, that explains that. I am still trying to see if the GPS is actually functioning. So far, I have not been able to see it working with the following apps: e-Mobile GPS Companion, Maps (built-in, worked with BT GPS), Google Maps, Nav4All or speedOmeter. Is there something else I need to do?

May not be software fixable. These may be hardware issues and if so, this is probably why it hasn't been fixed by now. Expect a revised version in the coming months, the 8830 rev "a" for instance. They obviously got it right with the 8170 (pearl).

But how is this fair to current 8830 owners?

for gps to work, you need vznav, and the subscription to vznav, then it will only work in vznav

hope this clears it up a lil

My update didn't go so well. Apparently you're not supposed to update software while having your laptop connected to a docking station. The RIM rep said the USB power isn't enough and causes trouble. I completely nuked my phone. So, I undocked and he worked me through the recovery process. Of course my backup failed so I lost some programs I had loaded but not a biggie.

Apparently this docking thing is a big issue...Learn something new every day.

Anyone know of a Verizon phone number I can use for the download? I have the Telus software installed, but I'd like to run the Verizon OS to see if there are any differences.

It seems that unless you are getting GPS, there is nothing significant.

^^^ Yeah, everything in that list except for VZNav stuff was already in the previous release, especially A2DP Bluetooth profiles. I think VZW is smoking crack and trying to toot their own horn a little bit with this upgrade by requoting the enhancements from the old OS as to not bring "too much" attention to the fact that this OS only brings VZNav capability.
