There are three illusive icons - so illusive I'm not even sure what they look like, but here goes.

One is a blue circle which indicates you have a BlackBerry Messenger message waiting.

The second icon is a smaller blue circle. It comes from Push Services like the weather apps from BlackBerry (http://mobile.blackberry.com/nss/category_push - link only works on the BlackBerry)

The most elusive is a tiny book icon which indicates you've received a service book which you need to accept (Options --> Advanced Options --> Service Book). I don't know why this happens, but I got one once but forget what it was for!

How do I know if I have a service book to accept? How do you accept it?

I don't recall, but it's under Service Books.

Options > Advanced Options > Service book. If it doesn't have a check mark, it's waiting to be accepted (click the BB logo key and choose accept).

What does this mysterious icon look like and what theme are you using? Icons are different in different themes.

I figured it out. It is the recorder icon. I had a voicemail message.

Here's most of the icons for a raw BlackBerry. Icons from other apps, including BlackBerry Messenger, aren't included.

Not to sound like a wise a$$, but the little quick reference which comes in the box, lists most, of not all, of the 8100 icons. It is useful as there are some new ones from past versions of OS, and with the smaller screen size, they can be difficult to read.
