Network selection on a Cingular 7100g is supposed to work outside the US. I've had luck in Germany, France, and Sweden. I'll give Hong Kong a shot next month.

What do you see when you go into the Network settings on the Cingular blackberry?

I see Network: Cingular

When I click the trackwheel, the only option I have is Close.

Argh this is frustrating.

Cingular's new devices don't allow you to Manually Select a network!

This because of the new 64K SIM Cards and the fact that they don't charge for Domestic Raoming anymore, so there is no need usually...

Sorry.

I am seeing this problem in the Caribbean and it is a pain. Cingular are here using the old ATT Wirless SIMS. Their 1900 MHz coverage is limited to tourist areas. Their general coverage uses the European 900 MHz frequencies. The 7290 device locks to 1900 when you switch it on and there is no way to manually tell it to change to 900 to get full coverage because the Network menu is empty. Would be very interested to know if anyone comes up with a fix.

The 7290's we've been getting here come with AT&T SIM cards in them and will also accept a Cingular card.

Default No manual network sleection on Cingular

I have the same problem that I cannot manually select network on my Cingular BlackBerry 7290. I basically could not get any e-mail while in Argentina for 3 weeks because of this issue and Cingular was absolutely horrible about providing any help (my wife was 3 feet from me and could use "manual select network" to get a GPRS signal and thus got her e-mail at all times). I was instructed to rebooted the BlackBerry every time I called them for help and they could not help me any further when rebooting did not fix the issue.

Interestingly, part of this issue seems to be related to whether you run your e-mail though a Coporate server or not. The manually select network option worked on my wife's Cingular BlackBerry until she switched to our Corporate server and the option bascially "disappeared" once her e-mail ran thorugh the Corporate server. Our server folks have been trying to get help from BlackBerry or Cingular but seem to get no support that would help them to resolve this issue.

VERY FRUSTRATING. STAY AWAY FROM CINGULAR

from cingular

The following guidelines only pertain to the RIM Blackberry 7100 and 8700 Series devices. The RIM Blackberry 62xx and 72xx Series devices will not be able to select a carrier manually while roaming internationally with a 64k SIM.

When roaming internationally the ENS Network Selection Functions that are embedded on a 64k SIM Card is disabled and the Manual Network Selection is Enabled. This will allow a customer to manually select a roaming partner while traveling abroad.

32k sim seems to be the ticket i guess for manual network selection..i could of sworn this was also related to HH sw VER. the latest SW ver put the option back or something...but i cant test it myself...

agreed. i have a 7100g on cingular w/ a 64k sim card. i was in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China over the last few weeks. I could not manually select a network. It was very frustrating, as sometimes I could only get a GSM signal and could not switch to another carrier. It only got stuck on GSM once over a 2 week period. other than that everything worked great. browsing the internet in china is faster than in the US.

So any updates on this or does anyone have a work around for this? Searching the internet seems that people have 'hacked' the Treo and possible the Moto phones to be able to manually select a network.

It is not possible on the domestic Cingular network with a BlackBerry, and likely will never be. However, as mentioned above, if you have the correct SIM, you should be able to use manual net select when roaming internationally.

You won't get in trouble, but in most markets, you won't be able to select the Cingular network and use it. There are some occasions where the Cingular tower is unlocked for a short time and allows you to use it, but that is rare.

Thanks Dc/dc, so that was weird, i selected the cingular one after reading I wouldn't get in trouble, then it didn't connect (So they'll show me but won't give me) then i scan again to go back to my Tmob and my Tmob shows up as cingular!! then i select it and it becomes tmob again. I know tmob bought cingulars stuff and thats why it does it right?
