Duplicated contacts

Migrated several users from BES 4 to 5 using Transporter. All seems to be working fine. We have an address book published in Exchange 2003 Public folder. The address book is not the same as Outlook GAL. Our BES users are configured to use their Desktop Manager to sync (one-way, download to BB). I found for a couple users when they sync after migration they got duplicated entries in their contacts on their BB handheld.
Why is that? How does the desktop manager know which ones need to be updated? Maybe this has nothing to do with the migration?
