I think with time any type of device that slides or flips is going to become loose.
Get the insurance plan... $5/month is worth it even if you paid the upgrade price of $150.

I'm pretty hard on phones and checked to see how loose my Torch was and its a little loose, maybe a thou or two but nothing to cry over.

I finally broke down and took mine back this morning. Too bad, I liked it but that clacking screen was just too much for me. I did the tape deal and it made it feel perfect, but I am not going to accept a phone my company paid $200 for that I have to put tape on it right our of the box. They only had one other one and it was just as clacky. Sorry RIM, deal breaker for me. Nice phone except for that. Maybe in 4-6 months I will see if they have any good ones around, if my 8310 lasts that long! It is on it's last ankle......

Where is your 9800 made? My 9000 is made in Canada and is a solid build, better, I was told than the 9000's sold by AT&T which I thought were made in Mexico. I thought some of the European 9000s were made in Bulgaria or some other eastern European country. I am surprised that any manufacturing plant in North America could compete with Mexico, eastern Europe or S/E Asia.
We don't get the 9800 here in Canada until Sept 24 when Rogers, Bell and Telus all lanch (the later two carriers overlaid their entire CDMA network with HSPA+ last year. Verison, when will you get on-board?) and we will get to see where they are built.
RIM and our Canadian carriers reward us for choosing a Canadian developed product by charging us $199 on a three year contract and no contract price at least $50 to more than AT&T.

Yes...your right! Mine was made in Mexico. And if history serves me right, the same thing went on when the original Curve 8300 came out. The ones made in Mexico were not as solid as the ones made in Canada. History repeats itself.

Slide the screen open and stick a layer or two of tape on the back of the screen near the top. When it closes the tape forces the bottom of the screen down onto the phone so it doesn't move when you are tapping the screen.

I don't worry about it myself, any mechanical part is going to have some play.

Mine's loose when it opens, not when it is closed. I guess not much I can do about that eh?

had the same problem myself after 4 weeks returned it to my operator and they stated it was wear and tear after 4 weeks........

I tried 2 units and both were loose. Not a good thing for the Torch. I contacted blackberry support and they said it is normal to have some % flaw in the device. I went back to the store and swapped it for the Bold 9780. I know that my next purchase will be Iphone or Droid since the manufacturer will take the feed back and try to correct it.

At least all you had was a loose screen. My buddy is now on his 3rd HTC Magic (droid) phone. First one started randomly corrupting the OS and hard locking. The 2nd tried to catch fire in his pants. The 3rd he's probably going to sell because Rogers sent him a Samsung Galaxy S.
