Just stumbled across this forum and it looks like a great place to get some help from some knowledgeable people.

Here's my situation.

I have an OLD blackberry (the original big blue one) and I was using a rogers (Canada) sim card on just fine. I just got a used Verizon 8830 World (I know it doesn't work in NA, I will be using it in the UK). I got an unlock code and it now reads the sim card but the network is still not disabled (shows as active). It reads my sim card but it doesn't seem to use it. I also still have a signal in Canada but when I make a call it says "phone is not activated, please call *611 for more info". Does anyone know how to get this phone working?

The phone will not work in North America as you stated. It does not support North American GSM frequencies. Last time I checked Canada was in North America.

And please update your profile. There is no BB 8840.

I've read that it doesn't work in NA because the frequencies don't match. If so then why can I pick up a signal? Shouldn't there be no signal because I don't have the correct frequency? Also all the signs point to an unlock that didn't work. Shouldn't a full unlock make all MPED options disabled?

The 8830 is a dual-mode CDMA/GSM phone. It's picking up a CDMA signal, probably from Telus, Bell, or whatever Mobility carrier serves your part of Canada.

You should be able to set it to GSM-only and get no signal.

When you're in CDMA mode the 8830 doesn't use the SIM.

thank you for the reply. Just a quick question. Would I be able to get Bell to activate my phone so I could use it in Canada? It is a used Verizon phone from the US but has been unlocked.

you can go on: opption-->mobile network --->..you save with: global or GSM
