Default BlackBerry 8100 - video playback problems

Please Login to Remove!

I just got my 8100 and the sample video plays with amazing quality. I have moved over mp3s which work fine, but I can't get a single video to play. I've tried mp4, avi, mov, and mpg. Either they say error, or the screen just stays blank and it won't play. Any suggestions.

This KB should help you out:

Supported media files on the BlackBerry Pearl

I tried a video last night. Got it to play but the sound was off. Looks like the video has to be a perfect combination of the above and then it should play normally.

.avi files are problematic for Macintosh computers as well. It's hit or miss if they'll play at all on a Mac and I'm guessing it's the same with a Blackberry. Any non-windows device is liable to gag on .avi formatted files.

I have tried all the supported forms of video and none work. Has anyone got their videos to work? Is there some conversion program that will make videos that will work on the 8100?

iTunes videos will not work. Neither will google videos or youtube.

I use mplayer encoder to encode mine in mpeg4 and they work great (hackers on a BB is some nice irony)

I too have had many problems transferring and viewing videos. I have cucusoft ipod converter and could convert the videos to mpeg4. They would not play!! I finally got one to work using xillisoft and the video playback was horrible. It kept freezing. Could any of this have anything to do with my sd card? my mp3s play fine though. WHats the best format way to view these videos.? The preloaded sample video looks great.

Pictures- does anyone know of a prog to make your jpegs a smaller file size???

Also how to reset your 8100 phone if it is frozen or freezing without having to take the battery out.

There is something called "Image Resizer." Works amazingly and it is a powertoy from Microsoft.

It can be found here:
Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP

You will see it on the right hand side.

I use Mplayer encoder to do vids for my Pearl. Works amazingly.

MPlayer - The Movie Player

Then use this to encode them:

Code:
mencoder -vf scale=240:180 <source file> -o <destination file> -of avi -ovc lavc -oac lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=230:acodec=mp3:abitrate=64
This exact line will "squish" widescreen vids (do to the scale flag) so if you want widescreen, play with the above.

This works beautifully.. I think it was in another thread, but Zro is the man..

I have converted videos form 2MB to 700MB with no problems playing on the 8100.. Once re-encoded they shrink considerably. I took a 238MB DivX down to 63MB after using the above... Quality and sound were perfect, and it only took about 3 mins to encode.

Just want everyone to know that this is by far the easiest way to go that I have found.

Awesome stuff.

I second that gfisher99. Zro method is the best! Controls work, picture is sized right, great quality, etc... I know I'm being greedy here, but it seems the volume on some of my encoded videos are on the low side. Others, simply the best method for Peal vids on the net... Zro if you have any ides on increasing the encoded video volume, it would be much appreciated. Great Work!

Lexlevic, there is a link to it in Zro's post. Once you get to that site, go downloads and download them mplayer for windows (if that's what you are using). You have to use the command line to operate this. I place the file I want to convert into the mplayer directory, go to a command prompt and copy Zro's example into it. Here is the example again (this should be one line)

mencoder -vf scale=240:180 temp.VOB -o temp.avi -of avi -ovc lavc -oac lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=230:acodec=mp3:abitrate=64

Replace the temp.VOB with whatever file you want to encode eg. temp.avi, temp.wmv, etc... then replace temp.avi with the name of the file you want to convert it to. It will end up in your mplayer directory if it is done right. Hope this helps

Once you get this working, you can play around with the "scale" section of it so that you can do widescreen vids without them squishing. I don't have the exact commands anymore, but I did manage to get it working.

Glad this is working for people.
