Interesting.
Personally, I wouldn't read too much into it.
I would imagine this is simply an error on Verizon's part, and not necessarily indicative of a newer version coming soon.
I don't think there was anything new about that software vs. what shipped in the devices. I got my 8830 on day 3 (e.g., May 17), and its preload version and platform exactly matched what was on the VZW website until recently.
Our IT guy has an 8830 evaluation unit because he was a VZW guinea pig. If I happen to see him, I'll ask him what his versions are.
The rep I spoke with this weekend at the verizon store told me they are planning on updating the 8830 this month or next month to enable GPS (for VZ navagator)and VCast.
I hope this has something to do with it.( maybe they are putting up the new software).

The VZW site now shows new device software dated 5-31-07. Does anyone know if this is an upgrade from what is on the device currently? Perhaps it will fix the problem with the constantly changing signal strength meter?

It's not an update. It's the same software you're currently using.
