Default Tethering not in 3G, always EDGE?

Please Login to Remove!

I just got a new Bold 9000, love it so far, testing out the tethering for some execs as we're looking to offer this instead of a BB and Data Card combo, but I noticed that although I had almost full bars on the 3G network, when I launched the ATT Connection Manager software, it kept saying it was on the ATT GSM network. However when I went back to my Data Card, it would change to the 3G Accelerated network and I seemed to get better speeds.

Now I'm using the latest download of the Communication Manager from here:

High-Speed wireless connectivity for mobile devices | AT&T wireless services

ATT Obviously and I havn't changed anything on the Bold or in the software itself. Is there other changes I need to make to get it to recognize the 3G network?

Exactly! Now i know i am not the only one. I had called ATT support regarding this - but these days its all upto your luck on who you get on support. Person was clueless and the call didn't go anywhere.

I tried using ATTCommManager and also tried using Blackberry Modem connection - still the same speed. No better even though I have 3G.

Nice to see I'm not the only one getting this. Yet I see posts of people getting 1200 - 2000 speeds, when I had tested mine on speedtest.net, the down was somewhere around 300k, up didn't even show up since it timed out.

I've got calls into tech support, I called our T-support for RIM thinking it was a device issue, I've called our ETS support for ATT, our account managers, hopefully someone can figure something out as we're looking to replace around 120 curve/8700 devices and data cards with a single Bold with tethering.. If not, theres going to be some pretty pissed off execs and I don't want to deal with them lol

Add me to this list as well, I'm using Communication Manager. I even did some speed tests so I know it's really EDGE. :(

I just confirmed that a co-worker in Texas can connect at 3G. He's on .167 and I'm on .190. What OS are you guys running?

Thanks. Aside from local issues I don't know what it could be then. I'm on the latest CM with full 3G coverage, but I get fairly slow connection speeds.

I'm having the same issue here in NY w d/l speeds up to 580 max. AT&T save me the story that its all because of the iPhone eating up bandwidth on their side. Anyone get anywhere?

This unit is on a .167 OS from ATT, It's a loaner that I've got to send back in about 30 days so I'm reluctant to upgrade the device OS. I'll call my rep and see what he says.

The .190 is beta?

I use it via Bluetooth everyday.

My other question is why are you all using the AT&T Connection Manager to connect? I use it with the USB cable and the Bluetooth with a regular dial up set up, 3G all day.

Just followed this link: Using BlackBerry As Modem - BlackBerryFAQ

If you pay for the tethering plan like you're supposed to, then you need to use CM.

Well, I finally got a good speed connection 1.4 down , but using a DUN connection not ACM, I had to remove it. By the way I pay for the tethering option. I also found that I had to downgrade my firmware to AT&T's latest and not use Vodaphone's firmware (which is the latest for the Bold). When I downgraded firmware to AT&T the 3G icon would not show up using ACM, this is on multiple computers. God this was so much easier with Verizon... sheesh their software and connection was flawless.

I have the same issues guys, I can only connect at 115.2kbps, never higher. I started a new thread above before I saw this one....I can connect via a Bluetooth dial up networking connection, but again, never connects higher than 115.2k. I am AT&T in the USA.

Is there a trick in the connection string using when setting up the modem?? I am out of ideas...
