what is up with that? (not using holster I pretty much always have it out due to email use)

This is a know issue. Upgrade your OS to the latest build. That will solve the battery issue.

I disagree. I went from .114 to .168 and had the worst battery life, ever. Went back to .114

Never had battery issues, with .114, in the first place. Upgrading OS's may work, for some. However, telling everyone to automatically update their OS is not very sound.

Actually, this has nothing to do with the issue presented by the OP. The Speck holster sold by T-mobile for 8900 DOES have the magnet in the right place, and it DOES put the 8900 to sleep every single time. However, it drains power for some weird reason. As the OP noted, it even drains it when the device is OFF!

...and just to confuse things more: when I first got the 8900, the included 3/4 slip case was far too tight, and I still have my old 8300 OEM vertical case. This worked just fine with the 8900 -- activated sleep mode, battery was great, etc. Unfortunately, I bent down to pick something up from the floor, and my 8900 must have been in just the right spot for the base to bend up from my belt and snap the plastic clip off the back...so I had to get a replacement case.

Looked all around, and didn't like the options I saw just yet for the 8900. Was at BestBuy shortly after that, and saw a dozen 8300 OEM leather vertical cases on the rack, and tried them on my 8900. The fit is actually very nice -- not too lose, not too tight, and none of the buttons get pressed in when the 8900 is in the case. Interesting part is that about half of them managed to trigger the sleep function, while the other half did not! So there's apparently some variability in magnet placement in this case: it's apparently in the right vicinity to always put the 8300 to sleep, but only some will work on the 8900.

For about 5 minutes of experimentation, I was rewarded with an 8300 OEM leather case that fits my 8900 perfectly and triggers the sleep function. Works perfectly with the phone, great fit, and nicely made and finished.

I bought the Speck holster the other day, I think I know the problem.

I discovered this quit on accident. I store my 8900 screen inward and a couple times when fidgeting with it while it still was in holster the camera flashed. This brought to my attention that the holster comes into contact with the right side button which by default is the camera button. So essentially you could be running your BB in camera mode which might would explain the battery loss.

It seems to be resolved with manually locking the handset or 'lock handset upon holstering' option. Look under Option/Password

Interesting. I've always had my right convenience key set to options, though. It's certainly not on the options screen, when I unholster it.

Maybe just having the key depressed, regardless of it's function, is the cause.
