Migrating from one BB to another while on a BES
Please Login to Remove!
Hi all,
I'm planning to migrate from my current 8700 to an 8820. I am on a BES and also have some e-mail accounts set up using BIS. I have a lot of stored messages on my BB from both the BES account and the BIS accounts and want to put them on my new BB. So, I'm going to backup the 8700 and restore it to the 8820, and then re-enterprise-activate the 8820 for my BES. Will the content on the BES that was on the first BB need to be re-downloaded, or will the BES just recognize that the contents of the two mailboxes (Exchange and BB) are identical?
TIA,
Benjy

Should be just fine, but any messages from the old device will be orphanded (ie. you will not be able to forward the old messages).

Thanks for the quick response!
RE: the messages being orphaned - even if they're on the BES?
Thanks,

I am on BIS and BES. I recently moved from 8700c to 8310. I used the desktop manager software, switch device wizard. It was flawless and I lost nothing. Do that.

If you are on BES I would highly recommend doing a Switch Device via the Desktop Manager (Installed as BES). This will automate the whole process and re-activate as part of the process, changing the device information on BES. As for the BIS Service the service books will be re-submitted to the device when a Change Device has been done.

We do all our activations wirelessly, I've actually never done one via pc. In fact when I open Desktop manager, I don't even log in, I cancel.
I'm moving from 8300 to 8310 using Switch Device Wizard, I'm concerned that I'll duplicate messages, addresses, calendar entries and memos when I activate.
It allows me to skip messages, but not the others, any guidance?

The DM must be connected to the MAPI system so select the Outlook profile, also the LAN. Connect both Devices at the same to the Workstation/Notebook.
When running the Switch Device Util the first device selected will be the 8300, it will do its backup, then you will be prompted to select the new Device PIN. It then restored the backup from the original device. Leave the Device cabled as the process usually turns the antennaes off. At this point I have just got into the habit of leaving the New device cabled even the Antennae may be on, it just allows the Activation to finish with no disturbance.
The Switching will not Duplicate anything, I not once had this happen out of all the devices I have done this for, including my customers.
This Switching essentially automates much of the same steps you will go through via Back/Restore in manual way. By doing it this you also ensure that the Application handles the change in Models.
Fishhead, Please advise what you mean by Skip Messages?
This should not occur with Messages, the only time I know something like this would occur is manual sync with Addressbook and Calendar's.

It worked fine, thanks.
One thing though, my 3rd party apps didn't come over; gmail, abc news, espn, etc.
