Default 7100i Can't Send/Receive Text Messages

Please Login to Remove!

I can't even find SMS on my 7100i. I have Compose Email & Compose PIN, but no SMS nor MMS. Anyone have any advice? I do not have a data plan and don't really need one but do recieve text messages once in a while. I really just got this BB to use as a Phone/PDA. I've been told different stories by Nextel folks in that some say if Nextel finds out you have a BB they will automatically put a data plan on your account, and others say it's not so. I give!

Thanks,
Rick

Have you tried pulling the battery for about 30 seconds, then reinserting it?

It could be an IT policy on the device restricting sms use. You can check by going to Options >Security Options >General Settings. Scroll to the bottom and see if there's any reference to IT policy.

I've tried removing the batter and also going to options... No luck with either.

There is no IT policy on the device? I'm not a nextel user but it seems to me there are issues with sms (can't remember for sure) on Nextel. You may need to call them.

I'm almost afraid to call them and even let them know I have a BB. They may want to impose a "plan" on me.

Default Still Looking for a Solution

I quote my initial statement: "Compose Email & Compose PIN, but no SMS nor MMS." I don't have an option for MMS. Is there some software update I may need? My BB Desktop Manager version is 4.1.0.8 & BB Device Manager is 4.1.0.9 if that makes any sense. I don't know if my BB is updated according to what version the desktop stuff is.

Thanks for your suggestions. Keep 'em coming!

See Dawg's response above. He says you need a data plan in order to sms because it's all mms.

Default How about MMS?

I've seen several posts about users having MMS availability without a data plan. Couldn't I use that? IF I could find it on my BB!

Default Some Users Have MMS WITHOUT A Data Plan

I can read, but it would be nice if you "professionals" would be a little more courteous to us newbies. If you can't, I'd appreciate that you don't even respond to my posts. I need an explanation - not some sarcastic remark!

Default Better grammar, punctuation, & spelling.

I'm sorry this has come to this...but, since you came to the conclusion that I couldn't read - let's examine your style of writing: "no data plan no SMS becuase its all MMS the 7100i doesnt support sms." I don't understand that, sir.

I came here hoping to get some discussion on how to simply "text" from my Blackberry that I bought on eBay. You also accused me of being "cheap." I said earlier that I didn't need a data plan and I still don't. Do you go out and buy food when your refrigerator is full, or put more gas in your vehicle when it's full?

I have a computer to do all those "data" things for me. I simply want to get rid of my PDA and pager and use those type services on one device. If there is absolutely no way to send a simple text message from a Blackberry without a data plan, then just say that. You don't need to tell me I can't read and that I'm cheap.

If this is truly a "help" forum, let's try to keep it that way.

Thank you,

Rick,
You bought the wrong device for what you want. You need a data plan in order to get the service books on the device for MMS/SMS. Once you get a data plan with Nextel the service books will push to the device and you can text.

You bought an old device on a dying network...sorry to say. Call Nextel and see what they can do.

Default Thanks Very Much

John,

I appreciate your response. I will give them a call today and if we get nowhere, I guess I'll go back to the old QWERTY pager and just keep the Palm Pilot updated.

Thanks again,
Rick
