Okay, so when I leave my 8830 on for a while, the memory just starts going down. And this isn't b/c I install anything, or I get a bunch of emails. If it's on for a day or two, it'll drop down from 16MB of available space (of the 48 it has) to 4mb. If i shut down and remove the battery for 30 seconds, when I turn it back on, I'm back up to 16MB. Also when the memory goes down, the whole thing slows down.

Anyone else notice this? Say something similar stated on the pinstack forums, but not here.

yeah. what's up with this thing. I got mine today and brought it home after about 2 calls on it. I think I was receiving a call when I was trying to make a call, and I think the application that controls the handset locked up. I could do anything else except make calls.

Later tonight, I went out and seen some people breaking into a building and tried to dial 911 on it, and it was still doing "nothing". I could browse the web but no phone calls. Too bad the Police department doesn't respond to text messages.......

Had to reboot the phone...

Was this thing shipped with really crappy firmware?

It's been reported on Pinstack that a memory leak issue the 8300 was resolved by running the Setup Wizard!

Give it a try and see if that fixes the problem. Let us know either way!

Well, the first thing I did when I got the phone was run the setup wizard, don't want to lose any of my current settings now that i've got the phone itself functioning as I want . . .

Also, I've looked at the posts on their forums, and the memory leak issue is NOT resolved, the setup wizard will delete unused languages and free up some space, but that's not the issue.

The fact that the memory slowly winds down is still an issue.

After restarting, I had almost 20 megs free.

It's been less than a day since my last restart.

This thing really, really needs a way to use the memory card for cache operations and swap memory!

May have found a culprit...

Seems Google Maps uses a lot of cache memory, at least in satellite photo mode.

It took only a few minutes of browsing around my neighborhood to rack up over a meg.

Now I've done nothing but use Google Maps for the last ten minutes and went from the almost 20 megs listed above to 17. And the memory didn't go back up after closing GMaps.

With memory so cheap, I fail to understand why manufacturers put so little onboard for system memory. RIM, PLEASE, IF YOU'RE READING THIS, PLEASE MAKE A WAY FOR THE DEVICE TO USE THE MEMORY CARD FOR APPLICATION AND CACHE OPERATIONS!

I don't like seeing that I have 0 mb free as seen above :(

Any developers out there? Is it possible to write a program handler that will launch applications or redirect cache to the card?

I've got a gig card in there that I'm not even really using for media.

Rebooting brought my cache back up to almost 20 again, btw.

I actually wasn't using it within a half-hour or so of checking the memory. I was reading this thread and picked it up the check the memory, took that picture, then immediately rebooted it. I should've done some testing. Will next time.

Mine kept on fluctuating. I started with 17mb and after a few hrs it was at 15 then it went back to 16.5. It's really wierd!

Now I'm down to 13 megs, and I haven't done anything since checking it last. Sigh... WTF eats up 5 megs?

is everyone restoring their full backup files from previous blackberries? it wouldn't make any difference would it? i'm gonna selectively restore it to see if the memory leak continues.

When mine went down to 0 it deleted all of my email and Phone log. I use blackberry maps so could be culprit. I have been checking every few days.

got a phone call yesterday from a number i didn't recognize, it was my neighbor who's number i had in my phone book. after the call i checked my phone book and his number was gone. later in the evening i went to call a friend and her number was gone from my address book. since i talked to her a few days before i went through my call log and her name and number were there, but gone from the address book. not sure if anyother numbers are gone, but what's going on here? anybody else having address dissapear?

You might consider upgrading to the latest sstem software as per the sticky at the top of the forum. It was released by Bell Moblity but it works fine in the Verizon 8830 and cured my memory leak. I have not had to do a hard reset since I upgraded.

The Sprint 8830 is running the latest OS (4.2.2.123). I've been keeping an eye on mine and so far haven't had any significant memory leakage. So maybe there's some truth to the rumor that the latest OS has addressed the issue?

Yes.. the Bell upgrade works on the VZ 8830. I still have the leak issue but nowhere near as bad as it was prior to the upgrade. I first noticed the issue when... like others... my phone logs disappeared followed shortly by ALL of my emails.... I did a search and began to understand that this was kind of standard operating procedure.

SOO.... to keep the memory vulture at bay...

I routinely:
~ delete unecessary phone numbers in my phone logs,
~ delete sent mail (i am on BES so the sent emails stay there anyway)
~ delete old text msgs
~ monitor the 'file free' portion of 'status'

I also have moved all downloaded ringtones/pictures/music over to my storage card, deleted the HELP files, extra language support and any unused apps that i have had for too long and don't use with any frequency.

I set my convenience key to 'options' so i can routinely check 'status'/'file free'. Best case scenario for my setup is having about 15mg free so when i see it dip below...say 12meg... I do a reset (alt/shift/del)...twice...

Typically the dip occurs after heavy usage... google maps/Beyond 411/browser/JiveTalk/emails/etc. Again... this is not a reflection on any third party software... just a reflection -IMHO- on the 8830. (Though I think the Pearl has the same leak issues... ) There are many posts about this (mem leak) issue both here on BBF and Pinstack. Makes for FUN reading.

Anyway.... just my 3 cents... unsolicited? Why certainly !

Thank you for all of this info. - Do you know of any reason why this would not have been a problem on the 8700? Perhaps less memory using programs or something like this. I am trying hard to get away from the 8700 and move on to the newer phones, but it didn't have a lot of the problems I am seeing on the newer generation.

I can't speak about the 8700 as I came over from a 7130e where I didn't have the leak issue either.
But I personally don't see this as a downside to the 8830. It is a sleek and responsive piece of hardware. The bulk of my daily usage is sending/receiving40-50 emails/SMS a day... using JiveTalk for 2-3 hrs a day, and then other misc software usage.

I have had no real problems since the day I received it. It is the best BB I have owned ... (my history: 7130e, 7100, 7230 and 950). Stopped along the way for the shallow allure of a XV6700 and a Moto Q.... (ahh the joys of Windows Mobile !!)

Just keep the OS updated, use the updated DM and be a little vigilant about the 'leak'.
