Default Considering the 7130e

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all! I'm a complete Blackberry noob and would like some feedback. I'm currently a Verizon voice subscriber and own a Dell Axim that I use as my PDA. I can't seem to justify carrying around two devices any longer and want to find the best option for my usage. My primary concern is having access to AIM on the go, in addition to my email accounts. I'll need to have a voice plan as well.

Would the 7130e be my best option? I would prefer to stay with Verizon as I have been a customer of theirs for years now. Plus, I like the design of the 7130e as it is more like a phone. Is there a decent, free AIM client available for the 7130e? Overall, would this be a solid choice for someone making the jump into a Blackberry who wants a solid PIM? How about ringtones? I'd like to have choices there as well.

I've read several reviews on cnet, letstalk.com, pcmag, etc. and most signs point to yes, but I thought this would be an exellent place to get feedback from those of you who have the device and use it daily.

Thank you in advance!

7130 would be a good phone and email device. PIM is pretty decent as well except it lacks a bit in calendar/task functions. No free AIM clients to my knowledge for any BB. Not sure if the 7130 supports MP3 ringtones or not. I don't believe it does though since I think the 8700 is the first BB to do that.

The blackberry has always been an email tool and it is by far the best there is when it comes to email. It does play the role of a decent phone as well, however if it's ringtones, solid PIM, and 3rd party apps you're looking for you might find that the treo 650 is a better fit for you.

Keep checking here though as I'm sure others will post their responses as well so you can hopefully get a better idea of what other BB users think.

take care

"Ramble IM" is a totally free AIM client for the BB, serach for it. I haven't used it but have heard good things. Also, "Yak-On" supports both MSN and AIM and is currently free as it is in beta stil.

The 7130e is a great phone and a great email device but it can't really compete with the Treo 650 and 700w when it comes to doing a little bit of everything. That said I have the 7130e and prefer it to a Treo but if you need a camera, SD slot, every application under the sun, etc then the Treo may be a better choice for you. Basically a BB does a few things very very well (compared to the competition) and the Treo tries to do everything but can't compete w/ the 7130e on email or phone functionality.

Ahh great info. I'm thinking more and more that the 7130 is what I want. I have an SD card for my Axim that I could use with a Treo, but I don't think I'd like the Palm OS compared to BB. The simpler the better, I don't think I would need tons of applications, just some decent chat, SMS, IM and email options in addition to a solid phone.

Edit - Of course, the 700w has Windows Mobile available, but just came out of the blocks and is still priced as such.

Just got my 7130e and I am loving it. For a mobile professional, without a strong need for full e-mail capacity (where the 7250 from VZW might serve better) it has no peer. For the money, it really is hard to beat.
