There have been a number of lawsuits claiming that those cell phone insurance programs are a scam. They charge you $5.99 a month and then a $110 deductible and replace your phone with a refrbished unit. Do you know if T-Mobile's program uses new or refurbished units as replacements?

i've read the fine print of the assurion insurnace program (from t-mobile) and it MAY be a refurbed unit
personally, i think the whole thing is quite expensive, $110 deductable is pricey.
i'm going to maintain the insurance until the price comes down on e-bay.
the insurance is 71.88 for 12 months (5.99 a month)
the whole thing is quite expensive.. so once you can get a replacement on e-bay cheaply, i'm dropping my insurance. plus i also have my 7100 that i just upgraded from

I've never gotten insurance as I consider it generally a waste of time.

the only reason i have insurance on mine is that my team all won blackberry 8700's and the IMEI number has not been registered yet, as they came straight from RIM, and was informed the tool that updates the IMEI numbers was being upgraded and unavailable till monday, and I am too impatient to wait, recieved on friday, will wait till i get to work on tuesday, to see if my warranty is valid, then the insurance comes off. i figure, the phone was free, so if it is ever damaged and do an insurance claim, 110 is a cheap price for a brand new 8700.....

I agree with DuckWingDuck on insurance. $72 a year plus a $110 deductible just doesn't make much sense. You have to be fairly certain that you will need to use the insurance to want this insurance.
But everybody's risk preferences are different. Personally, I rarely insure myself against a loss as small as the cost of a BlackBerry. If you find cost of replacing a BlackBerry to be highly burdensome and/or if you think there is a very good chance that you will need to replace your BlackBerry then this might make sense.

well, being a T-Mo tech, i see day in and day out when one corrupted program or hardware issue happens, your ****ed, and i sit there all day listening to people whine that A)no insurance B)not under waranty, or the classic C) too expensive to upgrade, I deserve more since I spend more, blah, blah, blah..... point is that you have to be responsible for your own options and not leave things in the hands of carriers, as they will screw you every time

hope thats the truth for t-mobile, cause its not with cingular. I had the linelock insurance on my raza phone and they would not send me a new one when it died(and that was with paying the $50 deductable). They only do factory referbs.

the insurance, as far as i know, from talking with customers, sends a new device in a sealed box with a new sim card, if anyone has a different story, let me know..

Oh totally, I've never blamed TMO if a device broke out of warranty, it's a toy for me, if it break beyond that first year of warranty, it's probably time to get a new toy anyway. But, that's just for me.

I totally agree. I think anyone who buys a phone that has a retail price of more than $120 should get insurance. Many people don't realize that the price you get when you sign up is not the price you pay when you have to replace your equipment b/c you didn't have insurance. SunCom makes every customer that does not want insurance sign a statement that they decline it and they they are aware they are responsible for the full cost of replacement if something happens.
For instance take the 8700, if you have insurance and you loose your device once in 2 years, you paid $120 in insurance then you pay the $150 deductable, so thats $270 total. Now, without insurance the replacement is $499.99 so insurance would save you $299.99 even if you only used it once in a two year period. if you are really unlucky and have to use it twice in that time frame, you are looking at saving $579.98 by having insurance.

8700c's can be had on eBay for about $340 (that's for a new unit with no contract: eBay).
I have a feeling that within a couple months 8700g's will be available at or below that. So I figure I'm paying $6 a month to insure against a $230 loss. I just can't justify paying $6 a month for insurance against such a minute loss.

Every provider does not offer insurance on BBs. As mentioned above, Cingular does not offer insurance on 8700's. You cannot get it if you want it....not that I do..even though I should with my history.

I like Cingular- they do not screw me and have even replaced my 8700 for free when I was the cause of a cracked screen....because I was a good, how should I say, blah, blah , blah, customer.

As someone who loses a lot of phones-- i would buy it if Rogers offered it. The price of the units area not that high- however if I can save a few hundred, why not? Guaranteed I will break or lose my blackberry in the next year. Simple.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry 8700g: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0) BlackBerry8700/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)
I think the insurance is a scam! I agree, why pay $73 a year plus a $110 deductable = $ 183 per year to insure a phone. That's one third the retail price of the phone! At that rate it would cost me $12,000 a year to insure my car! Phone insurance in my opinion is an inflated scam!
